Plough Hill, Cuffley, Potters Bar EN6 4DW

About This Pub

Ah, the Plough – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Cuffley, tucked away in a nice neighbourhood where you might even spot a celeb or two. I've got to say, the staff really make the place; they're so approachable and eager to help, whether it's sorting out a dietary request or just having a quick natter. The rotisserie chicken is brilliant when it's done right – that moist, flavoursome bite is something I'd recommend trying, especially if you're sharing a platter for value. Plus, with outdoor seating and it being dog-friendly, it's ideal for a relaxed Sunday stroll followed by a bite. On the flip side, though, it's not perfect; I've heard a few tales of the chicken arriving a bit pale and lacking that char we all crave, and the cocktails being pre-mixed rather than freshly shaken, which takes a bit of the excitement out of it. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual evening out, but keep in mind it might not wow you every time – still, with that 4.3 rating, it's clear most folks leave with a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always going the extra mile to make you feel welcome – it's like chatting with mates behind the bar.
  • The rotisserie chicken is a real highlight when it's spot on, offering that juicy, tender goodness that's hard to resist, especially with its tempting aromas wafting about.
  • It's a great spot for families or a casual get-together, with a welcoming atmosphere, dog-friendly vibes, and outdoor seating perfect for a sunny afternoon.
  • They've got solid pub classics like steaks, burgers, and fish & chips that hit the spot, plus options for dietary needs, which is a nice touch if you're watching what you eat.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable, making it an affordable choice for a good meal without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The food can be a bit inconsistent at times, like the rotisserie chicken not always getting that flame-grilled finish, which is a shame after building up expectations.
  • Cocktails are from a box rather than made fresh, so if you're after something a bit more crafted, you might be disappointed.
  • It can feel a tad relaxed to the point of being uneventful in the evenings, especially if you're hoping for a livelier buzz.
  • Some items might run out or not live up to the hype, as mentioned in a few chats from visitors who've been let down occasionally.

Friendly staff as always and we were excited to have the famous rotisserie chicken, usually finished on the grill with amazing flavour and char. Sadly, this time it arrived pale and lacking the flame-grilled finish we’ve come to expect. A real shame, especially after recommending it to others at the table. Drinks and condiments were still great, and service was lovely — we’re hoping it was just an off day and that the chicken returns to its usual glory next time.

We dropped by The Plough for lunch after walking our dog nearby and building up an appetite. Happily the establishment offers solid pub grub featuring steaks, burgers and fish & chips. This was exactly what we were looking for and our meals were both fresh and filling. While we sat outside, and could easily have been overlooked, we received efficient and friendly service from everyone. This meant that we didn't have to wait too long for our food and received all of the condiments that we desired. Good all round basically.

Service was very good . Polite staff. Refreshing to eat chicken from the rotisserie which was extremely moist and tender. We had the 4 sharer which was better value than buying two separate mains. Pity cocktails were from the box and were not made fresh. Nice relaxing place to chill outside on this sunny day.

My friend and I were served by an incredibly helpful staff member called Deanna. She was so thoughtful about my lactose intolerance. She has personal experience of dealing with someone close to her with this problem and so told me of recommendations that she'd given and of how well they'd gone down. I took her advice and she was always correct! She was also helpful - and very patient! - with my slight technophobia. The food was wonderful - way better than pub food ever is! The prices were extremely good. They very generously gave me a free bottle of Prosecco because it'd been my birthday not long before. They put a raspberry in each glass - a lovely touch I'd not seen before. Everyone was so nice but a special shout-out to Deanna who was so very helpful and welcoming.

Found this pub by accident. Great atmosphere and the right level of music. Nice family pub, not too much noise. The service was great, prices were very good and literally the food we ate was, for me at least, one of the top three that I have tried in the UK. Well done guys!
