About This Pub

Ah, Goffs Oak in Waltham Cross – it's one of those spots that feels like a proper Hertfordshire gem, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food is often a highlight; think hearty pub grub with seasonal twists that pairs brilliantly with their range of real ales and wines. The staff can be absolute stars, making you feel looked after without hovering, and that outdoor garden is just the ticket for a sunny afternoon pint or al fresco meal. It's got that warm, family-oriented feel that's great for gatherings, and with free parking, it's dead convenient. On the flip side, though, it's not without its quirks – some have mentioned it's a touch expensive for everyday treats, and if you're veggie or want more options on the menu, you might find it a bit lacking. We've seen a few recent reviews where things didn't quite hit the mark, like inconsistent quality or service slip-ups, so it might not be perfect every time. All in all, if you're up for a solid pub experience with good company and a bit of countryside charm, it's worth a go – just keep those expectations balanced and maybe save it for a special occasion.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally fantastic, with a great selection of pub classics and seasonal dishes that really hit the spot.
  • Service can be spot on, with friendly and attentive staff who make you feel right at home.
  • It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with mates, and it's family-friendly too.
  • The outdoor garden is a real gem for enjoying a drink or bite when the weather's nice.
  • Free parking is a bonus, making it easy to pop in without the hassle.
Cons
  • It can feel a bit pricey for what you get, which might put some off for regular visits.
  • Food options are a tad limited, especially if you're after more vegetarian choices or variety beyond the staples.
  • There have been a few mixed experiences lately, with some folks noting dips in quality or service that didn't live up to expectations.
  • While it's generally welcoming, not every visit is flawless, so it pays to check in advance if you're after something specific.

It’s with a heavy heart that I’m writing this review. I’ve been a loyal customer of The Goffs Oak for many years and it has always held a special place for me—great food, warm service, and a lovely family-friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately, our visit last Sunday was a real disappointment. The quality of the food has dropped significantly—it was less than mediocre—and the service, which used to be so attentive and welcoming, felt rushed and disengaged. It just wasn’t the same experience we’ve come to know and love. It seems there may have been a change in management, and sadly, it’s not working. We left feeling deflated, and I honestly don’t think we’ll be visiting as regularly going forward. A real shame, and genuinely sad to see such a brilliant pub lose its spark.

This place is a little expensive, but the food was nice. Free parking, but put your car reg in the reception when you go in. Wish there was more food options on meals, and vegetarian food.

Can't believe I'm having post another poor review after last week's offering in the New Forest. Popped in for a quick bite to eat, garlic bread pizette, steak and wine pie, scallops and pork belly for the 2 of us. Decor nice, tables decently spaced 50% full, not noisy so expected a nice experience. Arrived at 7:20pm quickly seated, drinks ordered, before drinks arrive ordered food. After 30 mins prompted a waiter to find out what was taking so long, for him not to return. If I had to guess I'd say he forgot to place our order with the kitchen. Waited another 10 mins for the garlic bread, to be then told he'd asked for them to prepare the mains!! A full hour after we ordered, still no food, told them wanted bill for waiter to say they were plating at that moment, had to be prompted to move starter plate after placing the mains on table. The food was very nice, but again awful service from waiting staff. Manager offered free dessert, declined, she then returned with bill with 20% off, but what should have been a nice meal and guaranteed return visit was marred by the disinterested staff. Pity as it only deserves 3/5 at a push.
