About This Pub
Ah, Coach & Horses—it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a traditional English pub, all wrapped up in a 500-year-old building that just oozes character. I've heard from quite a few folks that the garden is an absolute gem, especially if you're popping in for a drink after a walk or bike ride; it's spacious, family-friendly, and pairs nicely with their range of ales and beers. The food side of things brings in some exciting Turkish flavours with a modern twist, and when it's good, it's really good—like enjoying a hearty meal by the log fires on a foggy day. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and praise; some mates have mentioned the music in the restaurant area being cranked up a bit too high, making it hard to catch up over a meal. Service can be a mixed bag too, with stories of unhelpful staff or little oversights like cold food and billing mix-ups that leave you scratching your head. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.3, it's clear this spot has its heart in the right place, and if you go in knowing what to expect, you might just have a cracking time. Worth a visit if you're in Hertford, especially for that outdoor vibe, but maybe keep an eye on the details to avoid any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The pub has this lovely, historic charm with its 500-year-old architecture, making it feel like a proper old English spot that's perfect for a cosy pint.
-
They've got a great selection of ales, beers, and even some premium drinks at the bar, which is ideal if you're after something a bit special.
-
The big garden is a real winner, especially for families or on a sunny day—it's spacious and welcoming for a relaxed drink or meal.
-
Service can be spot on at times, with friendly staff and a warm atmosphere, particularly when you're enjoying the log fires on a chilly afternoon.
-
The food menu offers some tasty Turkish dishes with a modern twist, and it's nice to have that variety alongside the traditional pub grub.
Cons
-
The music in the restaurant area can be way too loud, making it tough to have a proper chat with mates over dinner.
-
Service isn't always reliable—some have mentioned unhelpful bar staff and even a bit of eye-rolling from the manager when raising concerns.
-
Food issues crop up now and then, like dishes being served cold or on cheap paper plates, which doesn't live up to expectations.
-
There have been gripes about overcharging or getting the wrong size drinks, which can put a damper on an otherwise nice visit.
-
Little things like running out of toilet roll might not seem major, but they add up and make the experience feel a tad neglected.

Stopped for a quick drink and rest after a long bike ride, big garden good choice of drinks and a nice food menu but didn't eat. Nice family orientated pub,
Restaurant in garden has no atmosphere, music far too loud, if you go to a restaurant with friends you want to talk (couldn’t hear one another). Asked manager to turn it down to which received an eye roll . Will not return!
Bar staff not helpful asked for 125 glass of wine told wasnt available charged £8 for medium that wasn't required served food cold on a paper party plate and was charged £16 instead of £20 as said it wasn't great then asked for cash only . Toilet roll ran out in ladies and had to ask for it. Best bit is the outside space bur not a patch on old Coach
Popped in for a drink and so glad we did. Loved this pub. Service outstanding , food was very good and the log fires perfect for a foggy Saturday afternoon. Thank you.
The Coach and Horses is a 500 year old pub with major impact from its Thai restaurant, charming old English architecture housing a good range of ales and beers. Car park butts immediately onto a quiet road and roundabout in charming Newgate Street.
