Gateway House, Station Approach, Manchester M1 2GH

About This Pub

Ah, Piccadilly Tap, what a gem it is for us beer enthusiasts! Tucked away just outside Manchester's Piccadilly station in that iconic Gateway House, it's become one of those spots you stumble upon and end up staying longer than planned. I have to say, the real highlight is their beer list – they've got an impressive array of cask and keg options, all kept super fresh and at prices that won't make you wince. Whether you're after something sessionable or a bit more adventurous, the staff are brilliant about it; they'll even give you tasters to help you decide, which makes the whole experience feel personal and fun. The vibe's just right too – friendly, lively without being overwhelming, and with extras like the upstairs seating, a pool table, and a terrace, there's space to chat or unwind. On the flip side, though, it can be a touch hard to locate if you're new to the area, and while they've got pizzas on offer, it's very much a drinking-focused place, so if you're peckish for more substantial grub, you might find yourself needing to venture out. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pre-train tipple or catching up with friends, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in Manchester – just go with an open mind and a thirst for good beer!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of cask ales and craft brews from top UK and international brewers – it's a real treat for anyone who loves a good pint.
  • It's in such a handy spot right by Piccadilly station, making it perfect for a quick drink before catching a train or meeting mates without any hassle.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff who go the extra mile, like offering tasters to help you pick your perfect beer.
  • There's plenty of space to relax, including an upstairs area, a pool table, and even a terrace for when the weather's on your side.
  • Prices are reasonable for the quality, so you can enjoy fresh, top-notch beers without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • It can be a bit tricky to find if you're not familiar with the area, as directions might not always be crystal clear.
  • Food options are fairly limited – it's mainly focused on pizzas, so if you're after a full meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
  • The decor has a certain retro vibe that some might find charming, but it could feel a tad dated or not everyone's cup of tea.

So I was in Town Picking up my Mrs from Piccadilly station after a business meeting in Oxford and I got there a little bit early so as I was walking up the station approach I stumbled across the Piccadilly tap so I decided to wet my whistle. I walked in and headed straight to the bar and I ordered a pint of IPA(I can't remember the name) but service was friendly enough, Great pint i paid £5.50(You can pay cash or card), Chilled out relaxed atmosphere mixture of working class to office types, There is outside seating aswell internal seating. Pint was very nice and very hoppy and was well served and the bar was clean and tidy, Polite and friendly staff. Great experience, Great pint and a stone throw from Piccadilly station. Me and my Wife post alot of reviews on Google and we always give out honest opinion and feedback on everything from service, value for money, cleanliness, customer service, ambience etc. We have reviewed everything from being at a pub/restaurants near our home in Manchester to football stadiums, Beauty treatments, Beach clubs, Hotels, Airbnbs, Flights etc. From Manchester to Split(Croatia), Supetar(Brac, Croatia), Hvar(Croatia), Rome(Italy), Vatican City(Rome), Bezier Cap de' agde(South Of France), Podgorica(Montenegro), Budva(Montenegro), Tirana(Albania), Sarande(Albania), Ksamil(Albania), Krakow(Poland), Zakopane(Poland) and in a few weeks we are off to Cape Verde. We currently have nearly 32,000,000+ views on Google alone. 5☆ 5☆ 5☆ 5☆

An oasis of excellent cask ales compared to many of the grim, over priced, keg beer pubs in the local area. On the station approach so extremely handy for meeting people or having a last pint before catching a train. Attractive design, friendly atmosphere, plenty of stools, an upstairs area and balcony as well as tables and chairs on the pavement to watch the world pass by. Pleased to see that there was a stout available and it was superb.

Argyle on tour! An excellent choice for pre match drinks.....once we found it !! Mixed directions on Google. It's only just off Piccadilly Station. Plenty of unusual craft beers and lagers to choose from. No food, just a drinking pub and obviously was a favourite of many judging by the continual flow of trade. Lots of Argyle and City fans mostly mature , with no idiots, all having a great time. It's got an upstairs as well with a balcony which looks out onto a busy, busy, vibrant street. A couple of City fans guided us through a magical "local " route to the Etihad.....quite bizarre !!

Absolutely amazing place. Spent a couple of hours trying a fantastic selection of beers. I wasn't sure what to choose so Ceri (who is the best bar assistant ever) gave me some small tasters. Probably the best bar and member of staff in the whole of Manchester. Thank you Ceri ❤️

I am a big fan of the Picc Tap. Whilst they have a diverse range of beers, I invariably end up drinking Big Trip. ‘Coz it’s bloody good and always on. The decor is ‘retrutilitarian’ and funnily enough takes me back to ‘80s Dublin. Bus Áras. No idea why. But it works for me. The thing I love most is the music. It’s always fantastic, eclectic; my knee taps, my head nods, and it makes me stay for another pint, and more. Staff are always great and it’s good value. The Tap does however, need to update the hours on Google, so I know whether it’s worth coming in or not. I’m sat here on a Thursday night; Google says midnight closing and at 1030 they are turning away a LOT of people, in January! Anyway, that is but a minor gripe. Still love it. It’s a great place to watch people hustling to, and dragging themselves from Piccadilly Station.
