About This Pub

Ah, the Oak and Black Dog in Stretton-on-Dunsmore – it's one of those pubs that really captures that classic British feel, you know? Tucked away in a picturesque spot, it's got this inviting garden where you can soak up the sun with a cold pint, and they've thought of everyone with family areas and even treats for the dogs, which is just brilliant for a day out. The menu's got some proper winners too, like those hearty Sunday roasts made from fresh ingredients, and they've nailed the options for different diets, so no one's left out. But, and I say this as a mate who's been around a few pubs, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard tales of waits that drag on forever and food that doesn't quite hit the spot, leaving you a bit underwhelmed. The staff are lovely when they're on form, but there are times when things get forgotten, and the inside can feel a tad generic compared to the charming outside. Overall, it's a solid spot for a casual get-together if you're passing through Rugby, but maybe pop in on a quiet day to avoid any potential hiccups – that way, you can enjoy the good bits without the frustrations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Oak and Black Dog has a lovely traditional charm and a welcoming vibe that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • It's super family-friendly with a beautiful garden for alfresco dining, a kids' tepee, and even a children's bar, making it great for family outings.
  • They offer a cracking selection of fresh, homemade dishes, including fabulous Sunday roasts and options for vegetarians, vegans, and those avoiding gluten – plus real ales and fine wines to wash it down.
  • Being dog-friendly with treats for your furry friends adds a nice touch, and the staff can be really welcoming and attentive on a good day.
  • With live music, dart boards, and a cosy log fire, it's got that community spirit that makes you want to linger for a pint or two.
Cons
  • Service can be hit or miss, with some reports of it being painfully slow or staff forgetting orders, which puts a dampener on the experience.
  • Food quality isn't always up to scratch – a few folks have mentioned disappointing dishes, like chips instead of fries that left them feeling queasy.
  • The interior might not live up to the charming exterior; it can feel a bit uniform and lacking in character, more like a cafe than a cosy pub.
  • There have been some grumbles about issues with the owners or management, which might make you think twice about returning for certain events.
  • It's a shame, but the atmosphere can sometimes fall flat, especially if the music or overall buzz isn't quite hitting the mark.

Took ages to get the food despite the fact their was no one else in here. THE food was awful ir said fries on the menu and have the fattest chips ever. THE cheese made me feel sick the chicken was awful. THE waitor forgot to write down half the stuff we asked for. THE atmosphere was awful with music being blasted at full volume despite asking them to turn it down. do not recommend probably the worst pub I have ever been to

Booked the Tina turner night and the performance was amazing. And the food was up to my expectations of a local pub and if the other issues hadn’t arisen I would have returned again. However there were some issues. Involving the owners, specifically the male owner. I’ve come home multiple nights and seen people screaming in to streets threatening the male owner. And I always assumed it’s just a case of the classic bad/sloppy drunk. However it seems that position is reserved for the male owner himself. During the Tina turner night he got exceeding drunk started smacking the roof and even stood on the bar while his also drunk wife tried to get him to get down. It’s honestly sad to see a family so used to that disgusting behaviour. The adult children of the owners were offering him more shots and enabled the issue. This just shows they have grown up to this behaviour and think it’s normal. They all treated it like their own personal night club. Other guests were getting disturbed and annoyed with his actions and comments. It was highly inappropriate and definitely not how you should run a business. If a customer was acting in the same way. They would have been kicked out. They not only ruined the night for many many people. They also have given me an insight into how this once peaceful village is going downhill. But from my experience they won’t be the owners for long. The whole family seemed to drink all the profits within the first two hours.

Had a lovely lunch today, reasonably priced and freshly made. No one else eating on a Saturday lunch which is a shame for them as they should be busy with what they are offering. Cosy log fire in the bar. Credit where it’s due, the staff (not sure if the owners) were really welcoming and lovely to the children & puppy. We will be back when in the area. A lovely village pub with lots of potential

Didn't eat, so this is based on a drink. Sorry, but the interior didn't live up to the "old" feel that the pub has on the outside. It's a beautiful building. On entering, despite the staff being very hospitable, the bar had no character. The bar tables were all too uniform and felt like a cafe layout. We were expecting an old floor, maybe big beams and a fireplace? I feel bad leaving this review but the atmosphere needs warming up. Too modern... My husband had wanted to pop in for ages and we were passing, so took an impromptu look. Wouldn't return, sorry :(

Dog friendly. Great place for a pint and a proper pub meal. Huge menu catering for every taste, basket meals for the less hungry. Food is brilliant and served with a smile. Fabby pub 👍🏼
