About This Pub
Ah, the Lower Turks Head – what a gem in the Northern Quarter! I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just pulls you in with its rich history and character; imagine sinking into those cosy pews surrounded by carved wooden bars and local artwork, all while enjoying a perfectly poured pint of Joseph Holt's finest. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and quick to serve, even when the place is buzzing. It's got live music and a terrace that adds a fun twist, making it ideal for everything from a casual afternoon drink to a lively night out. Plus, being right in the city centre means it's super convenient if you're nipping in after a wander. But, let's be honest, it does get packed sometimes, which might not suit if you're after some peace and quiet, and those operating hours can be a bit unclear, so it's worth planning ahead. Overall, it's a solid spot that does the classics well, with just a few niggles that keep it real – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in Manchester.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got that authentic historic charm, dating back to 1745, with beautiful wooden bars, checkerboard floors, and Manchester-inspired artwork that really makes you feel like you're stepping into the past.
-
The beer selection is brilliant – fresh Joseph Holt brews like their Bitter and IPA, served straight from the nearby brewery, and it's all in top condition.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient; even when things get busy, they handle it with a smile and make you feel right at home.
-
There's a great vibe with live music, like soul nights, and a heated outdoor terrace that's perfect for a chat with mates.
-
It's in a prime spot in Manchester's Northern Quarter, with handy accommodation if you're staying over, and it's easy to pop in for a pint after exploring the city centre.
Cons
-
It can get pretty crowded at times, especially on busy evenings, which might make it a bit of a squeeze if you're after a quiet spot.
-
The operating hours aren't clearly listed, so you might need to double-check to avoid turning up when it's shut, which could be a hassle.
-
As an older building, it might not be the most modern or accessible for everyone, with some nooks and crannies that could feel a tad outdated.

Fantastic classic city centre pub! One of Manchester's finest! And a top pint of Joey Holts!
Lovely old style proper pub. Friendly staff. Great artists singing and fun filled afternoons. A must visit if in Manchester city centre.
Visited here for the first time on Tuesday 25th March. Myself and a couple of friends(I think we was slightly drunk, so I do apologise). It was quiet but that was to be expected, the pub is clean and tidy as was the toilets. The service was great as was the beer.
Great oldie manchester bar, dates back to 1700's.
Great soul music played.
Good prices. Friendly staff. Central location. Also a hotel, which I've not tried.
Will return. Will try the hotel rooms next time in manchester.
Great service. The bar was absolutely heaving, but not only was I served in about 10 seconds, as the barmaid was getting the drinks? Two different barmaids also asked what I wanted. Efficient, friendly and an all round great experience.
