About This Pub

Ah, the Lord Nelson – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of what makes a great local in Manchester. From what I've gathered, it's got this wonderful historic vibe dating back to the late 1800s, with cosy nooks and a central bar that just invites you to settle in for a chat and a drink. The beers are a standout; Joseph Holt's cask ales and lagers are spot on, and they've even picked up CAMRA awards, which is always a good sign for anyone who loves their ale. Throw in the entertainment side – like the Tuesday quiz or the Saturday disco that's become a bit of a legend – and it's easy to see why it's such a hit for a fun night out or catching the big match on their screens. It's also thoughtful with extras like a beer garden and being dog-friendly, making it accessible for all sorts. On the flip side, though, a couple of reviews pointed out that the beer isn't always perfect, with some tasting a bit acidic, and the atmosphere can fall flat on quieter days, plus the staff might not be as bubbly as you'd like. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint or a lively evening, but it's worth popping in when things are buzzing to get the full experience – just like sharing a round with mates over a good yarn.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is top-notch, with fantastic cask ales and award-winning lagers from Joseph Holt – always a treat for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
  • It's got a brilliant atmosphere, especially with events like the quiz nights on Tuesdays and the legendary 'Nelly Disco' on Saturdays, making it a lively spot for a good night out.
  • Plenty of entertainment options, including darts, dominoes, and big screens for watching live sports – ideal if you're into footy or just fancy a bit of telly with your drink.
  • The pub's historic charm from the late 1800s, combined with cosy areas like the snug and vault, makes it feel welcoming and homely.
  • They're super inclusive with facilities like a beer garden, disabled access, and being dog-friendly, plus some great special offers like Fizz Friday to keep things affordable.
Cons
  • Some folks have mentioned the beer tasting a bit off, like it being acidic at times, which could put a dampener on things if you're after a flawless pint.
  • The atmosphere can be hit or miss; it's been described as dull on quieter days, such as lazy afternoons or even some Saturdays, so it might not always buzz as you'd hope.
  • Staff seem a tad quiet or not as chatty in a few reviews, which could make the place feel a bit less engaging if you're looking for that warm, interactive vibe.

Always come in here Christmas Eve with the family. Great place for drinks and playing dominoes. Always leave singing 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' 🎅

Great traditional Mancunian pub serving Holts beers. Usually a disco on at the back of the pub on a Saturday.

Joseph Holt so what can I say, acidic beer, staff seemed a bit quiet, atmospgere was dull for a Saturday. Pub itself is gorgeous, lovely old school pub! However, atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired.

I was passing the Nelson. Hadn't been there in over thirty years. I decided to call in for old times sake. It was late afternoon so the pub was pretty quiet hence the 3* for atmosphere. Really enjoyed my pint of mild. The place was clean and bright. Worth dropping in if you fancy a pint or Holts ale. Very nice.

Wide array of drinks, great atmosphere on a Saturday especially for disco night. Great staff and just an all round good night out. Also has multiple screens for the football fans and any other sports you fancy! Lovely pub and very cozy!
