About This Pub
Ah, Hoxley & Porter – it's one of those places in Islington that just feels like a proper neighbourhood gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's brilliant for a laid-back Sunday roast or a catch-up over some cracking cocktails and wine; the staff are dead nice and really make you feel at home, and the atmosphere with its cute decor is just spot on for a good natter. I love that it's not overly loud, so you can actually hear each other without shouting, and the set menu seems like a bargain at around £30 a head for three courses. But let's be honest, it's not without its flaws – sometimes the food, like the squid, can be a tad chewy, and if you're in a big group, you might end up twiddling your thumbs waiting for drinks or meals. Plus, if you've got specific dietary needs, the menu doesn't make it easy, so you'd have to double-check. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a fuss-free night out; I'd say give it a go if you're after something reliable rather than revolutionary – you won't be disappointed, but it might not end up as your absolute favourite either.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Sunday roasts are a reliable choice – think lovely arancini, squid, and amazing pork with crispy skin; it's a comforting go-to for a classic meal.
-
The atmosphere is spot on, with super cute decorations and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to chat without any blaring music drowning out the conversation.
-
Staff are really friendly and accommodating, always ready with a smile and quick to make you feel welcome, whether you're there for drinks or dinner.
-
Cocktails and wines are tasty, especially during happy hour, and the three-course set menu offers great value at around £30 per person.
-
It's a hidden gem in Islington that doesn't feel overcrowded, giving you space to enjoy your time without the hustle and bustle.
Cons
-
Food quality can be hit or miss; for instance, the squid sometimes turns out a bit chewy, which might disappoint if you're expecting perfection every time.
-
Service can drag a little in larger groups, with some folks waiting longer for their food and drinks, which isn't ideal for a quick catch-up.
-
The menu isn't very accommodating for dietary needs – it's not clearly marked, and options for gluten-free or vegan choices are limited, so you might have to ask around.
-
While it's a solid spot, it doesn't always blow you away as the best in London; it's more of a safe, dependable choice rather than a mind-blowing experience.

This is our safe spot for a good classic Sunday roast. We went multiple time and we will go again! Lovely arancini and squid (a couple of time was a bit chewy but generally is good) and amazing pork with crispy skin! It’s not the best one in the city that will blow your mind but it’s a good and safe option for a quiet and intimate brunch!
Super cute venue, I love the decorations and it’s really aesthetic. The barman was very nice and accommodating. We had some wine and both the white and rose were really tasty! I can’t believe this place is not heaving! I highly recommend !!!
Went for work lunch. Was lovely and greeted well. Had a gap between some.of us due to layout as there 18 of us but was ok. Service was good but some people waited longer for food and drinks. They also serve normal rum and cokes not just wine and cocktails as we assumed via online. Lovely portion food and was really nice also xmas I gave most my food to colleagues but not this time fried salmon was fab and roast potatos and dessert was sticky toffee pudding...gigantic lol tasty. Wood go back again.
Made reservations for dinner at Hoxley and Porter and was not at all disappointed. We were kindly welcomed by the staff and given the choice of seating. We ate from their three course set menu for around £30pp. The food was incredible, good portion sizing and the cocktails packed a punch. I'd definitely recommend and plan to return again soon.
We love this place because it has good cocktails for happy hour and no blaring music so you can have a conversation. The menu isn't great for dietary restrictions. You have to ask for it as it's not marked and there wasn't anything gluten free and vegan. The drinks and ambience made up for it though.
