About This Pub
Ah, the Horse & Jockey in Ossett is one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? I really appreciate how the staff are so warm and welcoming – they'll chat with you like an old mate, and it's clear they make an effort to include everyone, not just the regulars. The atmosphere is spot on for a relaxed night out; it's casual and buzzing with conversation, thanks to things like bar games and outdoor seating, and the food and drinks are top-notch without costing a fortune. You've got a great selection of beers, spirits, and wine, all at inexpensive prices, which makes it ideal for catching up with friends over a pint or two. But, on the downside, that no-phone policy is a bit of a mixed bag – it's meant to keep things sociable, but it can come across as overly strict if you're just trying to sort out your plans, and I've heard it feels a tad hypocritical at times. Oh, and if you're sensitive to pet smells, the occasional dog might make you think twice about sticking around for dessert. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good time if you're up for ditching the tech and embracing the chat, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea if you prefer a more flexible setup.

Amazing quality food, friendly bar staff. I realise people adore their dogs but the smell coming off 2 dogs made us leave without trying a dessert
Good atmosphere, talkative patrons, the staff are nice even though they are a little draconian and eager to enforce the no mobile rule. I get that it's meant to encourage conversation, but I got told off for trying to check the bus times to see if I had time to buy another pint. It's also hypocritical to then accept payments via phone contact less function. I admit I usually do this to be passive aggressive. Lol
I HIGHLY recommend this place, I went in last night for a quick pint with a mate who is visiting for a few nights.
I returned tonight to have more drinks and very much enjoyed myself. It's a shame I don't live in the area cos I would love to be here every night!!
Also, the no technology (phone tablet laptop) takes some getting used too, but it is a great idea to actually socialise with people! Something my generation doesn't do!
Great place, I’d love to return. What really stood out to me here is that unlike many smaller pubs in West Yorkshire (let’s not pretend this isn’t a problem), if you aren’t a regular you’ll be welcomed & made to feel welcome by the staff & the regulars. You won’t be gawped at or having the bar staff & the locals wondering what on earth you’re doing there. No phones or loud music but that means you can actually hold a conversation with someone. Recommended.
Door sign says it all. "Sam Smith Rules".

"Sam Smith" is renowned for imposing his "rules" within his pubs
I just don't want to drink in an establishment which applies such rules.
I would accept a quiet "technology free" area, but imposing these restrictions throughout is archaic.
If "Sam Smith" wants to impose these restrictions then fair enough but I doubt whether this business model will survive.
(Decamped to Boons in Horbury. Tradional "Real Ale" pub with no restrictions. Groups in conversation, individuals quietly reading complimentary newspapers, TV Sports, no juke box, a well populated beer garden an oh, customers even smartly checking their phones!!!)
