About This Pub
Ah, the Free Trade Inn – it's one of those places that just sticks in your mind after a visit. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, most folks rave about the fantastic array of beers on tap; whether you're into craft brews or traditional ales, there's something to tickle your fancy without costing a fortune. The staff come across as genuinely warm and on the ball, keeping things running smoothly even when it's heaving, and that beer garden with its views of the Tyne is just magical for soaking up the sun with mates. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – there was that one tale of a mix-up with prices and serving drinks in plastic, which sounds a bit frustrating and could spoil an otherwise great night. Overall, with such a high rating from so many happy visitors, I'd say it's well worth popping in, but maybe keep an eye on the bill and go early to beat the crowds. It's got that real community feel that makes you want to come back, warts and all.
Pros and Cons

The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – loads of craft beers and real ales to choose from, making it a top spot for any ale lover.
-
The staff are really friendly and efficient, even when the place is packed, which makes for a welcoming vibe.
-
That beer garden is a winner with its stunning views over the Tyne – perfect for a sunny afternoon pint.
-
It's got such a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, where everyone feels at home, no matter who you're with.
-
Prices are spot on for what you get, offering great value without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
There can be the odd service hiccup, like getting charged more than you should or issues with how drinks are served, which puts a dampener on things.
-
It gets pretty crowded at times, especially on nice days, so you might have to queue or struggle for a seat.

We had quite a disappointing experience on our recent visit to this venue. We had just spent £45 on a round of drinks (the bar person had tried to charge us £65). One of our group had very politely asked if his wine could be tipped into a glass instead of the plastic glass it was served in. The female behind the bar refused saying the pub was too full (which it wasn’t) then walked off. The male bar tender was just as rude and dismissed his request also. There was no justification for their refusal and poor attitude. One to avoid is our advice.
Hands down the greatest pub in Newcastle. One for all chapters of society. I have been multiple times over the years and seen this place at all times of year, all levels of business, and with different groups of friends, and this place never disappoints. Quite mind-week pint. Great. Evening weekend session. Ideal. Sublime.
Only had some drinks, sunny day in April, bar was rammed inside and out, service was still very fast and friendly, great beer selection. Good to see independent pubs succeeding.
Also a great view of Newcastle from beer garden.
A few weeks ago I got a message from Mack 4273 suggesting I try this riverside pub, So here I am. Paulicarus spotted a new brewery for me to tick off, Scottish brewery Newbarns from Leith. A 5.2% smokey brown, only a half as too strong for a pre midday drink. 8 real ales on handpump. Followed with a pint of Cullercoats Jack The Devil 4.5% bitter. An L shaped bar with a good size beer garden to the side and a river view terrace to the front. Thankfully the wind off the Tyne is not as arctic today as it was in South Shields yesterday. A CAMRA 2025 Good Beer Guide entry. Also wins awards for the cider. A fridge full of foreign beers as well. Only a 15 minute walk from the Tyne Bridge along the river. Retains the character of a working mans pub. We found it very friendly.
This is an excellent place.
Huge range of Craft Beer at sensible prices, it's very welcoming and not too bright inside. Fantastic staff and a lovely atmosphere with attractive merch for sale.
Visited on a sunny day, so sat in the tiered beer garden which has a fantastic view up the Tyne.
Great place, very much worth visiting.
