About This Pub

Ah, The Tanners Arms – what a gem in the heart of Newcastle! From what I've gathered from the buzz around, it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper pub experience. The food is where it really shines; folks are raving about the Sunday roasts and those mouthwatering beef brisket fries – it's all about that comforting, home-cooked feel that leaves you wanting more. Pair that with a cracking selection of beers and super friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and you've got yourself a winner for a casual catch-up or a bite after exploring the area. On the flip side, it's not perfect – there was that one chap who thought it didn't quite meet his hopes, even though he liked the service, and it does get rammed sometimes, so planning ahead is a must to snag a table. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after good value and a genuine local atmosphere, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking to enjoy the best of Newcastle's pub scene without any fuss.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with standout dishes like the slow-cooked beef brisket fries and that incredible Sunday roast – it's hearty, flavoursome, and just what you fancy after a wander around Ouseburn.
  • The staff are so welcoming and friendly; they make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, which really adds to the cosy atmosphere.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of drinks, especially the beers, making it a top spot for a proper pint in Newcastle.
  • It's got that authentic local vibe, perfect for soaking up the real essence of the area, and it's even dog-friendly, which is a lovely touch for those with furry friends.
Cons
  • One or two folks have mentioned it didn't quite live up to their expectations, like in that mixed review where the service was great but the overall experience fell a bit flat – not sure exactly what went wrong, but it's worth noting.
  • It can get pretty busy, so you'll probably need to book ahead for things like Sunday lunch to avoid disappointment.

One of the best bites in Byker! Couldn't recommend this place enough especially after a nice tootle around Ouseburn - staff are very welcoming, great selection of drinks (especially beer) and food to die for!! Would definitely get the slow cooked beef brisket fries!!

A must stop if you want to taste the authenticity in Newcastle. Sunday Roast is an unforgettable experience which maximizes the saying of “where ever you go do what you see others do”.

When I asked for Sunday lunch recommendations, this place was the most recommended by FAR. Absolutely worth the hype couldn't fault this dinner at all, just be sure to book in advance. We got a pork belly and a beef and also shared some stuffing and pigs in blankets. Dinners were around £17 which is really good for the quality and portion size we were all stuffed! Fluffy but crispy roasties, creamy mash, tasty honey carrots and loads of gravy! From what I could see they only did mains but tbf you don't need starters or puds

Tanners Arms Pub Review Visited Tanners Arms recently, and while the experience had some positive points, it ultimately fell short of my expectations. First, the service was great – the tall server was friendly and welcoming, which made a positive first impression. The pub is also dog-friendly, which is always a nice touch for pet owners. However, the menu was a bit underwhelming. While it’s a pub, I expected a bit more variety. Most of the options seemed to be either chicken or beef burgers, with about 90% of the menu being Cajun chicken-related dishes. I was looking forward to trying something new, given the pub's high rating for food, but sadly, it didn’t live up to the hype. The food itself was average. The chips were greasy and had a distinct old fryer oil taste, which was disappointing. The burger, despite being advertised as "gourmet," was very plain. It lacked any dressing or interesting flavor – just a basic burger with no excitement. For the price (£17-£25 per person), I expected more. The venue had a nice atmosphere, but it could use a little work in terms of upkeep and ambiance. Unfortunately, I didn’t use the toilets, so I can’t comment on those. Overall, I wanted to love this place, but the food didn’t quite hit the mark. Would I return? Maybe for a drink or to try something else on the menu, but I’ll be lowering my expectations for the food next time

Absolutely AMAZING Sunday lunch had here. The friendliest staff too. We had the Belly Pork and we ordered sharing portion of cauliflower cheese. The BEST cauliflower cheese we’ve ever tasted!! Will definitely visit again.
