About This Pub

Ah, Donegans – it's one of those spots in Bangor that just feels like a hidden gem, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food really steals the show; think generous portions of home-cooked delights that leave you stuffed and smiling, whether it's their Sunday roasts or those Irish-inspired dishes. The staff go out of their way to make everything welcoming and efficient, which adds to that relaxed vibe they're aiming for. It's got this charming, old-school feel with all those Irish collectables dotted around, making it a cosy escape right in the heart of town. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – some folks mention the atmosphere can be a bit unsettling without any background tunes, and that odd door noise might put you off if you're after a peaceful chat. Still, for the price, it's a solid choice if you're up for good grub and a bit of character, and I'd say it's worth a visit for anyone looking to enjoy a proper meal with friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious and well-cooked, with huge portions that leave you feeling properly satisfied – perfect for a hearty meal.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a unique, cosy atmosphere with Irish knick-knacks that really transport you, like stepping back in time for a bit of that authentic charm.
  • Great value for money, especially with options like the Sunday lunch specials that pack in quality without breaking the bank.
  • They offer a welcoming spot for private functions and outside catering, which is handy if you're planning something special.
Cons
  • The atmosphere can feel a bit off at times, with no background music and occasional noises like doors banging, which might make it less relaxing.
  • It might come across as a tad pricey for what some see as pub grub, so it's worth checking the menu first if you're watching your wallet.
  • The place isn't open every day, which could be a downside if you're hoping to pop in on a quiet Sunday evening.

Great choice of food, food was well cooked and tasted great. Staff were friendly and helpful . Weird atmosphere in restaurant, not an overly comfortable place to sit with no background music but instead the noise of a door banging loudly every 5 or 10 mins, the banging from the waitress making the coffees at the machine, and staff shouting across the restaurant to each other with instructions and questions eg 'how much is a pint of Guinness?' with the response yelled back from 4 tables away

We found Donegans while walking around and we nearly didn't go in because it seemed a bit pricey for pub grub. What a mistake that would have been. Huge portions that are absolutely delicious. We made the mistake of ordering a starter each, which were a very good size, and then when our mains came we struggled to finish them. I had the roast rib of beef, which was presented beautifully, and the knife slid through the beef like butter. The giant Yorkshire pudding, mash, roast potatoes and veg were gorgeous and the extra gravy that was given without being asked for was very appreciated. The rest of our party found their food tasty, well presented and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

We came here today for Sunday Lunch - a first time visit and it was absolutely excellent. We were served by a gentleman called Ivan who was just fantastic, a special thanks to him for such good service and a special thanks to the chefs as well for the superb food. We had the Sunday specials - chorizo with onion soup to start & also the sticky ribs. Then for the mains my wife and sister had the fish pie special, and I had the roast beef with a massive Yorkshire pudding! It was so tasty and extra gravy, horseradish and any extra drinks were dealt with so quickly, with no issues at all. To finish, the 3 of us shared the apple crumble which again was genuinely one of the best crumbles we’ve ever had. Such friendly service, real hearty home cooked food - what is not to love. Bangors little hidden gem when it comes to a Sunday lunch. Thanks again!
