About This Pub
Ah, the Clarendon in Wolverhampton – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff really stand out; they're so friendly and make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or hosting a get-together in the function room upstairs. The beers are spot on too, with a fantastic range including those cask ales that hit the spot, especially with deals like the cheap Mondays that keep things affordable. And let's not forget the beer garden – it's a brilliant spot for soaking up the fresh air when the sun's out, complete with covers and screens for a bit of comfort. On the flip side, though, it can be a bit frustrating if you're keen for a drink and find it's closed, as the hours seem to vary and sometimes wrap up early, which might put a dampener on plans for a longer evening. The food menu's decent but not extensive, so if you're after something more adventurous, you might need to look elsewhere. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back night with mates, offering that classic pub charm with a few quirks that keep it real – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe check ahead to avoid any surprises.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are an absolute delight, always friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers, including top-notch cask ales that are in excellent condition – and don't miss the Monday deals, like pints for just £2.70!
-
The beer garden is a proper gem, with a covered area and TV screens, perfect for enjoying a pint outdoors when the weather plays ball.
-
It's a great spot for events and functions, with a function room that's been praised for being accommodating and fun for gatherings like baby showers.
-
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a nice mix of traditional pub vibes and a cosy setting that makes it easy to settle in for a chat.
Cons
-
It looks like opening hours can be a bit unpredictable, as it's currently listed as closed, which might catch you out if you're planning a spontaneous trip.
-
The menu isn't massive, so if you're after a wide variety of food options, you might find it a tad limited compared to some other spots.
-
With varying closing times shown, like as early as 4 PM on some days, it might not be the best for late-night get-togethers.

We were enticed in due to the board outside advertising Asian grill food.
All seemed ok when we strolled in and got a table
The menu isn't large but a reasonable sample across the board
We got talking to a lady that had visited just 2 weeks before and she said the food was amazing and the portion sizes very large
Hmmm sounds promising so we ordered the chicken curry and naan and an extra naan.
Just one of us dining tonight
So we're waiting a while and clearly something's not right as the food is taking ages but nevertheless we sit in hope
Anyway the food comes out for the lady we get talking too and she is far from impressed
The portion sizes would not have filled a small child so she challenged the waitress and compared her last visit to this
She couldn't answer but sent the manager out
The manager earlier had made a very strange comment at the bar whilst I was being served and said if a person's bill came to a sum ending in pence eg £...95 just round it down to £...50p
Hmmmm what's going on here
Anyway the manager insisted that the food portions have always been the same size
The naan bread looked fine, the curry dish tiny and very watery and the salad the lady ordered was 4 thin slices of cucumber sliced into strands with a sprinkle of grated cheese on the top, or at least what it looked like
Now I'm no chef but I do love cooking, yes I know it's not the same but anyways
So the lady challenges the manager and asks for a refund as what she got this time is in no way a comparison of what she was served the last time
The manager offered a 50% refund but the lady had not touched the food whatsoever
We then asked for a full refund too and was told we had had our food. Sorry missus but no we have not
There was also a guy over my left shoulder contemplating ordering food too but he retreated seeing what was on offer
So the manager refused to talk to us anymore as she said we had all become aggressive
We hadn't but we were all trying to get our point across about the offer of a 50% refund
To be fair the manager she did also offer the lady more food without charge but to be fair what was delivered did not look appetising, except the naan bread to be fair and how long would it have taken to bring another helping after the first delivery was more than half an hour anyway
So after a few minutes she accepted that we had not had the food and fully refunded both tables and took the untouched food away
I do not like to criticise and when 5 people are all talking to you at the same time it can be quite daunting but she could have managed the situation better by merely saying please let me talk to you each a table at a time
She was very rude and did not manage the situation at all well, so needless to say we won't go back. I guess if we went back she'd bar us anyway lol
A note of caution, buyer beware. If you would like a few drinks and some great tummy filling food and you're on a bit of a budget like most of us are these days then maybe try somewhere else
I won't be disrespectful to the manager she was engaged with unhappy customers but she could have defused the situation rather than making it worse by being rude and obtuse
Sorry Clarendon, but it's a no thank you from us
Lovely friendly staff, nice atmosphere and decor. We visited a great party in the upstairs room. We used the bar downstairs it was a Saturday night, so busy. We didn't try the pub food as the party hosts had outside caterers in. It had a nice atmosphere we would visit again.
I have been to this pub many times. The food is lovely and the beer being next to the brewery is exceptional. Its £2.70 a pint on Mondays for cask ales. On this occasion I opted for a Guinness as I have a trip to Ireland planned. Tina served me and what a lovely pint of Guinness it was poured to the standard that Guinness set. I know this as I came back from Ireland only this summer and had a few over there.
I had my baby shower in the function room upstairs on Saturday and had an amazing day thanks to Mario and the team. They helped us set up the room (which was a massive help being 9 months pregnant!) and were very accommodating.
Everyone had a fantastic time and we all stayed later at the pub downstairs as we were all having such a good time.
The pub itself also has a great atmosphere, a good selection of drinks and the staff can’t do enough for you. But the Clarendon and the staff here really pulled out all the stops to make sure my baby shower was a great day. Everyone (especially me) had a fantastic time and it was totally stress free thanks to all the staff there.
Would fully recommend for an event or just to visit the pub for a drink in general. Always different events like open mic, DJs, quiz’s etc. on too.
Thank you again 💕
The Clarendon Hotel is a Victorian street corner pub. There is a wide selection of beers lager and cider, including three cask conditioned hand pulled real ales, which were in excellent condition when we visited. There is a nice pub garden and the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
