About This Pub
Ah, Bread & Bitter – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you once you step inside this old bakery turned cosy spot on Mapperley Top. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, it's brilliant for a relaxed catch-up with mates over a well-kept cask ale or one of their standout meals, like the vegan roast that's drawn people from miles away. The team there seems genuinely caring, with dog-friendly vibes and events that keep the energy up, but let's be straight, it's not perfect – you might find the drinks a bit pricey or notice the beer options don't stray far from pales, and on quieter days, it can feel a touch flat without any tunes in the background. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out, especially if you're into quality grub and a welcoming atmosphere, but I'd say it's worth checking out with an open mind to get the full picture.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on, especially their vegan options and Sunday roasts – I've heard folks raving about the seitan roast, and it's a proper treat for anyone looking for something hearty and delicious.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of beers on tap, with 12 cask lines and craft kegs, plus things like real cider and locally roasted coffee, making it a haven for beer enthusiasts.
-
The staff are always polite and welcoming, adding to that cosy, community feel – and it's great that they're dog-friendly, with water bowls and treats on offer.
-
Regular events like curry nights and quizzes keep things lively, and there's a 30% discount on bottles and cans for takeaway, which is a nice little perk.
Cons
-
The beer selection leans heavily towards pales, so if you're after something like a mild, porter, or stout, you might be a bit disappointed – it's not the most varied.
-
Prices can feel a tad steep for what you get, with some mentioning that the quality doesn't always match up, like the odd pint tasting off.
-
It can get a bit quiet and lacking in atmosphere at times, especially on a weekday afternoon, with no background music to liven things up.
-
Booking tables is a hassle as it's only by phone, and they might not pick up during busy periods, which could put a dampener on your plans.

We drove 1.5 hours to get here because my partner was dying for a hangover vegan roast. The roast did not disappoint; the vegan meat was seitan, which is preferable for us compared to other options you'd typically see (nut roast, mushroom wellington, etc.). It was a very decent portion and I thought it was great value.
We came on a Sunday and thought it was going to be very busy, but weirdly it was not, so the atmosphere was a little bleak. It's a shame because the pub is very nice and comfy inside, and they have an excellent selection of ales on tap 🍻
My partner and I come here often, great little local Castle Rock Brewery with good drinks and really good food. Staff are always polite and love that Bread & Bitter are dog friendly too, providing water bowls and treats. You can tell the chefs actually care about the food as they cycle specials and the food is all good quality, fresh, hot and great portions. My partner’s favourites are the halloumi bites and nachos, and my favourites are the fish and chips and Greek mezze platter. The only thing we have found average are the pizzas, the base is very doughy and cheap tasting, but everything else is amazing. Would love to try the curry when I can. Highly recommend!
Great food, great service and a pleasant experience all round! The only thing lacking was a bit of background music or some atmosphere, it was an empty Wednesday afternoon, we were the only ones sat in the conservatory bit and it felt a little flat. Other than that, it's a great place!
I’ve drank here many times and there’s a superb choice of cask ales…provided you like pales. A mild, porter or stout (not bloody Guinness) would be nice. I’m always surprised how expensive it is due to the quality being meh. Two pints I had Saturday tasted of manky pipes. Hoping this is a one off, it’s usually excellent ale. The staff act like they work in Wetherspoons and definitely need to work on customer skills. They’re not really rude but not overly polite. Having to constantly tell them I’d checked in was a niggle. The ladies toilets stink also.
Its always been my favorite place in Mapperley and I’ll go again but at their prices I expect better, much better.
Visited for first time today at lunchtime & came away very impressed with atmosphere, beer choice (11 hand pumps!!) & there was Adams Ghost Ship 0.5% alcohol great when you are driving & really nice.
Had no food but lovely service & would have no hesitation about going again.
Top marks, try it, 🍺🍺🍺🍺
