About This Pub

Ah, The Vale in Woodthorpe – it's one of those pubs that feels like a reliable old mate, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the carvery steals the show for many, with fresh, tasty roasts and plenty of sides that make for a proper filling meal, especially on Sundays when it's buzzing. The beers are spot on too, with a great range of ales and that CAMRA discount adding a nice touch for us beer lovers. It's got that family vibe going on, with options for the kids, and the live sports make it a go-to for watching the big games in a relaxed setting. But let's be straight, it's not all perfect – the place does look a bit tired and could do with some updating to make it more welcoming straight away. A couple of folks have mentioned the carvery not quite hitting the mark for them, and queues can build up, so timing your visit right might be key. Overall, it's a solid choice for good food and drinks without breaking the bank, and I'd say it's worth a try if you're in the area, just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The carvery is an absolute winner – it's fresh, generous with portions, and highly recommended for a hearty Sunday roast that leaves you feeling stuffed and satisfied.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of real ales and beers, including guest ales with a cheeky 10% discount for CAMRA members, making it a top spot for ale enthusiasts.
  • It's family-friendly with a dedicated children's menu, so it's perfect for a relaxed outing with the little ones.
  • Live sports on premium HD screens via Sky and BT Sports add to the buzz, whether you're catching the footie or F1 in a lively atmosphere.
  • Quiz nights and events keep things entertaining, and the overall vibe is welcoming with friendly service and reasonably priced grub.
Cons
  • The pub could do with a bit of a spruce-up; it's feeling a tad dated and not as inviting as it could be, which might put some off at first glance.
  • Opinions on the carvery vary – while it's brilliant for some, others have found it underwhelming, so it might not live up to every expectation.
  • There can be queues, especially on busy days like Sundays, which means you might have to wait a bit for your meal.

NOT Nottingham's best carvery. We were recommended the carvery at the Vale from a couple of different people so we went to try on Sunday (25/05). Super disappointed. The pub is in dire need of refurbishment and refresh, the overall look and feel is not appealing or welcoming. The carvery we had was awful, the Meat was actually OK but everything else was really bad. The roast potatoes were overcooked, black and soft, the veg all tasted strange, the Yorkshire pudding was tasteless, rubbery and not fresh, the stuffing was a hard skinned, overcooked ball of mush and the gravy was watery and tasteless. On top of this, I seriously question the cleanliness here. The tables were all "sticky" and had not been wiped properly, there were bits of food on the floor and to top it all, I sat and watched the gent that served the meat touching food in the Kitchen and return without washing his hands. No gloves or any other protection. I actually felt angry that they could serve such a sub-par experience and expect their customers to be happy. My best advice is to avoid, avoid, avoid.

Came on Mother’s Day for the Sunday Carvery and probably one of the best I’ve have. Lots of side options to choose from and plenty of meat which they were not tight with for my meat loving partner! Atmosphere was really nice and friendly. There was a cue for the carvery but given the quality and price and the fact it was Mother’s Day this was not surprising, You’d cue just the same amount of time at other well known establishments and get half the flavour! Food was all really nice and fresh. Staff were lovely and even rushed off their feet were very accommodating and efficient. We needed a table to sit so a member of staff quickly cleared one up for us. Very reasonable prices for the drinks with lots of options to choose from. Will absolutely return again for another carvery, Especially on a day it’s not so busy so the que is a little smaller. All in all a really nice day out and even got a cheeky free dessert! 😊
