About This Pub

Ah, Bakers Arms – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper British gem, tucked away in Sewardstone near Waltham Abbey, where you can imagine settling in for a pint after a brisk walk. I've heard from mates that the staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, with friendly faces ensuring your table's sorted and your glass is never empty for long. The food's generally a winner too, especially their Sunday roasts and classic pub fare, which are spot on for a satisfying feed, and it's brilliant that they welcome dogs, making it ideal for those countryside outings. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing; a few folks have mentioned waits that drag on, and some dishes haven't quite lived up to expectations, like a chewy starter or a main that felt a bit mishandled. Still, with an overall solid vibe and that cosy, inviting atmosphere, it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep your expectations balanced and maybe go on a quieter day for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in – shout out to folks like Stephen and Jo for their top-notch service!
  • They've got a cracking selection of pub classics and seasonal dishes, with Sunday roasts that come highly recommended for a proper hearty meal.
  • It's a dog-friendly spot, perfect for popping in after a lovely walk in the nearby parks or along the River Lee.
  • The outdoor seating area is a real treat, especially on a sunny day, and it's nice and clean throughout.
  • Portions are generous, so you won't leave feeling peckish, and the atmosphere is cosy and comfortable for a relaxed catch-up.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit slow at times, like when food takes ages to arrive, which might put a dampener on your visit.
  • Food quality isn't always spot on – some dishes, like the lamb, have been described as disappointing, with chewy textures or odd presentations.
  • It might not hit the mark every time, as a few meals have felt underwhelming compared to the hype.

Nice seating area outside. Food took forever to arrive. Had the squid as a starter, a bit chewy but nice. Had the lamb rump and fish& chips for main. Fish was good but the lamb was really bad. Lamb was served on a bed of warmed up frozen peas and beans, and a grilled lettuce head. Balsamic glaze on the plate which did not go with any of the other flavours. Meat had zero flavour or salt and look like it was boiled in a bag. One of the waitresses was very abrupt, borderline rude. Nice place to have drinks but do not order the lamb.

Stephen and Jo took very good care of us. Very comfy and enjoyed a big weekday lunch with lovely ice cream sundae. We lingered longer than expected due to good portions and Stephen and Jo's hospitality. Thank you for a very good lunch and pint. We will be back.

Stayed at the premier inn next door. Stopped here for tea, Staff were lovely and friendly spotlessly clean throughout. Great selection of meals on the menu, ideal for a fussy eater like me, great selection of sides if you just wanted to graze. Had the vegetarian grill, I liked it that much, I went again the following day and had the Garden Patch Medley. Lovely place, great outdoor seating area.
