About This Pub

Ah, V's Punjabi Grill at The Canal Tavern, what a gem it is down by the Thames in Gravesend! I've got to say, the buzz around this place is mostly positive, with a solid reputation for dishing out some proper authentic Punjabi grub and grills that hit the spot just right. The staff really make you feel at home, always cheerful and on hand to sort you out, which is brilliant if you're popping in for a casual meal or even a private do – they've nailed that welcoming vibe for families and larger groups. And let's not forget those cracking waterfront views; sitting there with a cocktail in hand, overlooking the river, it's just the ticket for a relaxed evening. But, and I say this as a mate would, it's not all perfect – a few folks have had a rough time with the food, like one person who found their take-away curry tasting nothing like it should, all greasy and disappointing. It seems like there might be some ups and downs depending on the day, so if you're planning a visit, maybe aim for dine-in rather than take-away to get the full experience. Overall, it's a place I'd recommend giving a go, as the highs definitely outweigh the lows, but go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally delicious and authentic Punjabi cuisine, with some rave reviews about the grills and overall taste that make it a real treat for Indian food lovers.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always serving with a smile and going the extra mile, especially for groups or private parties where they've been spot on.
  • It's got a fantastic location right on the waterfront in Gravesend, offering tremendous views of the Thames that really add to the atmosphere.
  • As an upmarket cocktail bar, it has a clean, upscale vibe with wide screens, making it a welcoming spot for families and casual get-togethers.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; some dishes, like the chicken tikka masala, have been described as tasting off or overly greasy, which is a real shame for what should be a standout meal.
  • Recent experiences, particularly with take-aways, have left a few folks disappointed, suggesting inconsistencies that might put a dampener on things.
  • While the service is great, there might be occasional slip-ups, as one review mentioned minor niggles in an otherwise positive visit.
  • With a mix of high and low ratings in the recent bunch, it seems like the place has its off days, so it's worth checking in advance if you're after a reliably top-notch experience.

I received a chicken tikka masala take away. The sauce tasted disgusting. Nothing like how a tikka massala normally tastes. Same with the mint sauce for the poppadoms. Really disappointed

We had a private party booked, we had the back room with a long table set up, we were allowed to arrive early to decorate it with balloons and banners. All the staff were so friendly, attentive and always served with a smile. The food was very good and anything we asked for they were very happy to accommodate us. Thank you to Cliff and the rest of the service team.

Had a very disappointing meal from here this evening. It started off well with really quick delivery however, before we even open the curry we could see it was swimming in grease. We dapped it with kitchen roll as much as possible and got it plated up. Despite our best dabbing efforts, the plates were still very greasy from the food. The food itself was very spicy so between that and the excess grease we couldn't actually taste any flavour in the curry. We were both extrealy disapointed. It wasn't particulary cheap which we wouldn't have minded had the food been up to a better standard. We actually ended up throwing most of the food in the bin and ordering from somewhere else. Would not recommend and will not be ordering from here again.

A group of us visited the Punjabi grill for dinner, the venue on arrival is in a nice location looking out onto the prom. On entering the venue the bar is very clean and up scale. We were greeted with a very warm welcome and served drinks properly. The venue it itself feels authentic and fun, my only negative on the decor is that there are far too many televisions in a relatively small bar area. Our order was taken in good time and came out promptly. It tasted wonderful and all the food was as ordered. The waiting staff were attentive in ensuring we had enough drinks and sauces on the table. I was very impressed with the venue going out of their way to preheat some gluten free naan bread for me and ensuring it was not cross contaminated. Overall, The service here is wonderful. The food is authentic, generous and great value for money. We had a delightful evening and will be returning soon!
