About This Pub
Ah, the Volunteer Tavern – it's one of those places that just makes you feel right at home from the moment you step in. I've got to say, the staff really shine; they're so approachable and willing to sort things out, like when they whipped up a special pork belly for someone with garlic allergies – that's proper thoughtfulness right there. The food is another highlight; we're talking hearty Sunday lunches and burgers that could rival the best, all without breaking the bank. And that garden? It's a lovely spot, all decked out with flowers and light, ideal for a chilled afternoon with friends or even bringing along the little ones and the dog. They're big on community too, with events and a real emphasis on inclusivity and sustainability, which gives it that modern twist on a classic pub. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – the place is quite compact, so it can get a bit squished when it's busy, and there was that unfortunate mention of a rat in the garden, which might make you think twice about sitting outside. Plus, the hours can vary, so it's best to check ahead. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a good night out in Bristol; you'd probably have a cracking time, as long as you go in with realistic expectations.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly, helpful, and go the extra mile, like cooking up a special dish if you have dietary needs.
-
The food is spot on; think big portions of delicious Sunday roasts and the best burgers you've had, all at a fair price.
-
It's got a fantastic atmosphere with a beautiful, cosy garden full of light and flowers – feels like a little paradise, perfect for relaxing with mates or the family.
-
They're really community-minded, hosting events like quizzes and being super inclusive, plus it's great for kids and dogs, making it welcoming for everyone.
-
Sustainability and empowerment are big here, which adds a nice touch to the traditional pub vibe, and they've got a solid selection of drinks with occasional discounts.
Cons
-
It's a bit on the small side, which might make it feel cramped during busy times, especially with the limited beer garden space.
-
There have been reports of pests like rats in the garden, which could put a damper on things and make it hard to fully relax outside.
-
Opening hours seem a tad inconsistent or subject to change, so it's worth double-checking before heading out to avoid disappointment.

Tiny pub with a small beer garden. They tried to make it look nice, but with a huge rat running overhead on plastic corrugating it was hard to relax. I'm not bothered by rats, but didn't really want it in my gin. Service was good and staff and customers were friendly.
In reply to YOUR reply to me:
I'm so glad to hear all the things you are doing, and the pest control would be a must. Review downgraded due to your response trying to tell me it was a squirrel. . In urban areas you are never far from rodents, I get it, it's difficult . I have owned many pet rats so I know exactly what one looks like. We saw it run along the wall and over the plastic, it wasn't a quick glance. Like I said I'm not bothered by them, but I don't want someone telling me I don't know what I saw. Unless it was a squirrel that had recently waxed its bushy tail and had a nose job, it was a rat!
My colleague was disgusted by it as they had a fear of them. I gave a generous review with 4 stars for atmosphere. Many would have left a 1 star. I don't live locally so can't pop in.
What a lovely pub, popped in for Sunday lunch, I wanted the pork but can't tolerate garlic so couldn't have the porcetta. The chef cooked me pork belly instead, what a fabulous guy to go out of his way to do that, thank you so much. The food was amazing and delicious with big portions. my husband had the beef. Wonderful staff so friendly and helpful, a brilliant atmosphere. Well done guys
What an epic place!
I will no longer complain when my wife wants to go shopping 😀
Fantastic, friendly and welcoming service, the food was amazing, the best burger I have ever had 😋
Great value for money to boot!!
If you're bored shopping and need something to give you the energy to keep going, come here, it has just what you need!
I will be back!
One of the nicest pubs an lovely bar staff. Have been here couple times on my own or with friends, great selection of drinks and sometimes we would come here for quiz’s evenings. Also I had lost my phone and my phone was handed in in this pub and they were so lovely to keep my phone safe till I came back and collected it. Thank you so much for that. Definitely recommend to come and visit this cosy pub.
