About This Pub
Ah, The Punchbowl – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local hideaway in Bristol's buzzing Old Market, dating back to 1806, so it's got that lovely historical charm without being stuffy. I have to say, the team there are absolute stars; they're always up for a laugh and make you feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening. The drinks selection is spot on, with rotating Wickwar ales and craft options that keep things interesting, and those Monday Madness deals are a real winner if you're watching the pennies. The beer garden is a highlight – it's modern, heated, and perfect for soaking up the sun or hosting a small gathering, which is great for summer vibes or even cosy winter nights. On the food front, the burgers and dirty fries are brilliant value and taste fantastic, especially with those deals, but do steer clear of the pizzas; they're not quite up to snuff and could do with a rethink. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed afternoon or evening out, though you might want to keep an eye on the music volume or check the facilities if you're fussy. It's got that warm, community feel that makes you want to come back, flaws and all – just remember to go in with realistic expectations for the grub.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of rotating ales, craft ciders, and lagers, plus some great deals like £4 pints on Mondays.
-
The cosy lounge area is perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, especially for Sunday lunches or quick lunches.
-
The beer garden is an absolute delight – heated and enchanting, ideal for balmy evenings or even winter get-togethers.
-
Burgers and dirty fries are spot on, with affordable deals that make it a brilliant spot for a bite and a drink.
Cons
-
The pizzas are a bit of a letdown, more like ketchup on cardboard than a proper meal, so you might want to skip those.
-
Music can get too loud at times, which might spoil the vibe if you're after a quiet chat.
-
There have been some niggles with the facilities, like running out of loo roll in the toilets, which is a bit frustrating.
-
Food quality isn't consistent across the board – some dishes shine, but others fall short, so it's worth playing it safe.

Went to this pub today for Sunday lunch.
The food & service was outstanding.
Would definitely go again.
To the pub: your staff are very friendly, your burgers and dirty fries are fantastic, especially the £15 drink+burger deal and my friends and I had a great time in the lovely beer garden... But your pizzas are an embarrassment and resemble little more than ketchup on cardboard - please improve!!
Barman very friendly.
Music a bit loud for me.
Nice local pub.
Never been before and I was pleasantly surprised. Appeared to be very popular. Friendly staff. Nice decor. Good vibes. Back garden looked good with big screens. I didn't have any food. Loo roll in the ladies toilet would have helped though.
Great place to chill and get some beer or cider. They show football and possible other games(not too sure, the bar staff is friendly and helpful. And if you manage to get before 8 on so you could get the pay hours offer for Amstel or Teachers inches for £3.50. Great spot for drinks inside or outside - street seating area or garden area.
