About This Pub

Ah, The Woodthorpe – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its rich history as a former family home, right opposite Heaton Park, and you can really feel that old-school charm mixed with a welcoming buzz. I've got to say, the staff are gems; they're so approachable and make the place feel like a proper local hangout where you can kick back with a pint of Holts' finest or try something from their gin selection. The beer garden is a real winner on a nice day, and they've got a menu that caters to all sorts, from traditional roasts to lighter vegan options, which is spot on for a casual meal. But, and I hate to mention it, there have been times when the food hasn't quite hit the mark – think cold chips or overly greasy dishes that leave you wishing for better. Plus, waits for your order can stretch out, which might not be ideal if you're popping in for a quick bite. Overall, it's a solid spot for a relaxed evening or a family gathering, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan for a bit of patience. I'd still recommend giving it a go; it's got that heartwarming feel that makes you want to return, flaws and all.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and welcoming, with its historical roots making it feel like a cosy step back in time.
  • Friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home, always ready with a smile and helpful advice.
  • A solid selection of drinks, including top-notch Holts beers and a variety of gins, rums, wines, and even teas and coffees to suit all tastes.
  • The outdoor terrace and beer garden are brilliant for a relaxed pint on a sunny day, and it's family-friendly during the day.
  • Food options are varied and hit the spot for pub classics, with hearty roasts, fresh salads, and even vegan dishes on offer.
Cons
  • Some meals can be hit or miss, like reports of cold chips or greasy dishes that don't quite live up to expectations.
  • Wait times for food might drag on longer than promised, which could leave you feeling a bit frustrated, especially if you're in a rush.
  • Accessibility isn't perfect, with things like the disabled facilities being a fair walk from the main areas, which might not suit everyone.
  • It's a shame about the occasional slip-ups in food quality or service, as it can detract from an otherwise lovely visit.

Cracking pub. Nice easy atmosphere. Food is good. Nice place for a quick bite to eat and a few pints. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

A friend and myself had lunch there Friday 16th May both meals were awful! My friends so called home maid cheese pie wasn’t homemade and the chips were cold! I had the fish cakes with egg. Fish cakes greasy the horseradish sauce in edible and the salad also in edible as it was also served on the very hot plate! Woodthorpe use to be one of my favourite places to eat but never again!

Went to a family reception here. The staff was helpful and friendly and we enjoyed ourselves. They have a lovely little garden area that leads off the room. The only thing that let's it down is the disabled toilets was a fair distance to get too from the room.

Great serving staff friendly and polite can’t fault the ladies 5 stars Visited today told 30 min wait that turned into over 1 hour and as I’m pregnant after a longggger than expected wait started to feel dizzy. I asked the staff how much longer as we had waited an extra 30 mins then expected and they said they would put it through asap given my situation as we was 4 left in the queue so was going to be an even longer wait had I not said anything. 0 stars Food came out and was ok but the flatbread was burnt maybe as they rushed it through so didn’t eat. Shame as £50 is a lot of money to throw away. 2 stars Been here before and had nice food think it’s hit and miss depending on time of day
