Irish Pub, The Woodbine, 215 Blackstock Rd, London N5 2LL

About This Pub

Ah, The Woodbine – it's one of those neighbourhood gems in Highbury that really captures the spirit of a traditional Irish pub while throwing in some delightful surprises. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the pints of Guinness are poured to perfection, and the food scene is a real highlight, with delicious Thai options during the week and those unbeatable Sunday roasts that leave you feeling satisfied. It's got a cracking atmosphere for catching live sports or joining in on events like the Tuesday quiz or Wine Wednesday specials, and the team behind the bar are just lovely, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the craic. On the flip side, though, the decor might come across as a tad basic to some – all those plain wooden tables and quirky touches like fairy lights could feel a bit hit or miss if you're expecting something more polished. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out, especially if you're up for good drinks, hearty eats, and a friendly vibe, but it might not be the place for those seeking a fancy overhaul. I'd say give it a go; it's got that homely feel that'll likely win you over once you're there.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Guinness is spot on, just like you'd expect in a proper Irish pub – it's been serving it since 1919, and it shows!
  • They've got a fantastic selection of Thai food during the week and hearty Sunday roasts that hit the spot after a long day.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with events like quiz nights on Tuesdays and wine deals on Wednesdays that make it a fun place to gather with friends.
  • It's brilliant for watching live sports, with big screens and a lively vibe that gets everyone involved.
  • The staff are absolute gems; they're friendly, know their regulars by name, and make you feel right at home from the get-go.
Cons
  • The interior can feel a bit plain and idiosyncratic for some tastes – think simple wooden tables and fairy lights that might not wow everyone.
  • A few folks have mentioned it doesn't quite have that charismatic charm, so if you're after something more stylish, it might not be your cup of tea.

Shur tis a mighty place altogether, great Guinness, Thai food & Sunday roasts. Excellent place to watch live sports as it has a large drop down screen & two other big flat screen TV's. The owner Mick & his staff are great people & know all their regulars by name & their usual order.. which does matter! The only times I been disappointed is when the bell goes for final orders at the bar! The Woodie just keeps me coming back for more.. Guinness, Good Food & the craic! Highly recommended so don't miss out!

Idiosyncratic but not particularly charismatic interior - plain wooden tables; many stools; dried flowers above the bar, and hanging from the ceiling; standsrd prints and advertising posters on the walls; and myriad fairy lights adorning the stripped-pine walls, giving the place the feeling of a fairy grotto inside a Wild West cabin. Pint was fine, but it was served by a member of staff whose rudeness - no smile, no pleasantries - indeed, no communication at all - was something to behold. That's it. That's the revised review - edited in response to the owners who expressed resentment at the original one, but who would be better off ensuring they employ staff who, when relieving punters of their money, show just a scintilla of manners.

The Woodbine in Arsenal is a true gem! Stepping inside feels like discovering a hidden, cosy retreat. The quaint ambiance and charming decor create a wonderfully warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease. What truly sets the Woodbine apart is its unexpected and delicious Thai-inspired menu. Each dish is bursting with flavour, and it's clear that the kitchen takes pride in its creations. Coupled with an extensive beer selection that caters to all tastes, you're guaranteed a delightful culinary experience. Alyssa, our server, was incredibly knowledgeable about the dishes, and her recommendations were spot-on. Her service, along with the efficient and friendly bar staff, made our evening truly enjoyable. It's worth noting that the Woodbine is popular for a reason, and on evenings, it's wise to reserve a table to avoid disappointment. The only minor critique would be the music selection, which could perhaps be a bit more varied to enhance the overall atmosphere. Despite that small point, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Woodbine and will definitely be returning. It's a fantastic pub that successfully blends a traditional, cosy feel with modern, flavourful cuisine.

So happy my friend took me to The Woodbine, has a really nice vibe. Good selection of beers and exceptional Thai food. The chef really knows how to make Thai food properly, spiced to perfection and the aromas were out of this world. Perfect location for a pint before heading to the Emirates to watch Arsenal play. Can't wait for my next visit.
