About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Wicked Lady – it's this cosy spot in St Albans that's become a bit of a favourite for a relaxed meal or drink. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; think hearty Sunday lunches with perfectly cooked cod and chips, or that gammon and egg that had everyone raving, and the desserts are just sublime – I mean, the chocolate brownie sounds like something you'd dream about. The team there are absolute stars, always on hand with a warm welcome and efficient service that makes you feel looked after without any fuss. Plus, with that garden area, it's brilliant for a sunny afternoon pint or outdoor dining. On the downside, it's not without its flaws; a few mentions of dishes not quite living up to expectations, like a lukewarm fondue or overdone scallops, and it does lean more towards fancy gastro vibes rather than a down-to-earth local pub, which might not suit if you're after something more traditional. All in all, with such a solid rating, I'd say it's well worth a visit for a good night out, just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with standout dishes like the aubergine lasagne, cod and chips, and that chocolate brownie – it's a real treat for anyone popping in for a bite.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive; big shout-out to folks like Ryan, Matt, and Jess who make you feel right at home with their top-notch service.
  • It's got a lovely garden area that's perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying a meal al fresco on a nice day.
  • With a welcoming atmosphere and space for groups, plus reasonable prices and weekly offers, it's a great spot for everything from a casual lunch to a get-together.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss, like the fondue that wasn't hot enough or overcooked scallops, which might leave you a tad disappointed.
  • It feels more like a gastro pub than a traditional one, with a slightly stale atmosphere at times, so if you're after that classic cosy pub vibe, it might not quite hit the mark.

Great food, amazing staff and reasonable price. Went for lunch ordered squid starter and sausages with mash for main. Both were perfect.

This was my first visit, although I have driven past on numerous occasions, and it was worth stopping for a spot of Sunday lunch. On arrival I was promptly and warmly greeted and welcomed before being escorted to my table and in no time at all given a menu and asked what I would like to drink. The server was polite, attentive and accommodating which made for a pleasant dining experience. The food was well presented, flavoursome and absolutely scrumptious with just the right portion size to leave one sufficiently satisfied. Definitely a thumbs up from me and a place I will frequent again as well as telling others about this delightful restaurant in such an idyllic spot.

We stopped here for lunch after a walk. It was quite possibly the best pub lunch I have had in a very long time. All four of us were happy with our orders. A particular favourite was the brownie with honeycomb ice cream (see photo) - it was bloody amazing! My fish and chips was delicious, crispy and piping hot. Staff are lovely as is the outside seating area.

It's ok here. Nice gastro pub environment, pleasant atmosphere - if a little stale. Not really a pub anymore. Had beef croquette, sharing fondue, and pork belly with scallops. Fondue wasn't hot or very exciting, and scallops were overcooked, but the croquettes were very nice and the rest of the pork dish was great. I probably wouldn't go again out of choice, but it's perfectly fine here
