About This Pub

Ah, The Reading Rooms – what a gem of a spot in Wheathampstead! From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, it's all about that homely feel where you can pop in for a cracking pint of local beer or a gin and tonic, and the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome, even your four-legged friends. I love how they've got a great range of drinks and organise events like quiz nights to keep things lively without it feeling overwhelming. It's become a real hub for the community, with people raving about the vibe and the chance to chat away in a cosy setting. That said, it's not without its quirks – the place is on the small side, so if you're after plenty of seating or planning a big get-together, you might find yourself jostling for space, and those afternoon opening times mean it's more of an evening haunt. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just keep in mind it shines best for smaller, laid-back occasions.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of locally sourced beers, wines, gins, and even teas and cakes – perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
  • It's got that cosy, community vibe where conversation flows easily, and they host fun events like quiz nights.
  • Dog-friendly setup means you can bring your furry mate along, which is a lovely touch for us animal lovers.
  • With a solid 4.8 rating, it's clear folks keep coming back for the great atmosphere and variety of drinks.
Cons
  • It's quite a small space with mostly standing room, so it can feel a bit cramped if you're after a comfy seat for a longer session.
  • Opening times start late in the afternoon on weekdays, which might not suit if you're fancying an early pint.
  • The limited seating could make it tricky for bigger groups or if it gets busy on popular nights.

Friendly, helpful staff in a cosy location where you get to support a local micro brewery with rotating guest beers and a range of events to enhance your evening. Pleasantly surprised to find they had sports on the TV without feeling like it was the focus of everyone in the venue.
