About This Pub

You know, when you step into The John Bunyan, it's like slipping into that classic country pub you've always imagined – nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside with its picturesque setting and a real sense of history. Anthony and Faith, the owners, are just lovely; they go out of their way to make sure you're looked after, creating that welcoming vibe that turns first-timers into regulars. The food really steals the show, with generous portions of homemade dishes that folks rave about, like a Sunday lunch so hearty you might not finish it all. Pair that with their selection of top-notch ales from local brewers, and you've got a spot that's ideal for unwinding after a ramble or catching up with mates over a game of darts. The outdoor area is brilliant for warmer days, and in winter, that log fire makes it utterly snug. But, fair's fair, it's not without its quirks – if you've got little ones in tow, they won't be able to join in except for special do's, which could be a downside for family outings. Plus, with a small kitchen, it's wise to book ahead to ensure you get a table without any fuss. All in all, it's a gem of a place that does the traditional pub experience proud, though it might suit couples or groups of adults best. I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after genuine hospitality and a bit of countryside charm.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The owners, Anthony and Faith, are absolutely charming and make you feel right at home with their warm, personal touch.
  • The food is spot on – generous portions of homemade pub grub that leave you feeling well fed and satisfied, with highlights like that incredible cherry pie.
  • It's got a cosy, traditional vibe with a real log fire in winter and a spacious beer garden for sunnier days, perfect for relaxing after a walk.
  • They serve up excellent ales as a free house, working with local brewers, and it's a welcoming spot for all sorts of visitors like walkers and cyclists.
  • The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, with pub games like darts and a friendly crowd that makes it feel like a proper community hub.
Cons
  • Children under 12 aren't allowed inside except for private events, which might put off families looking for a family-friendly outing.
  • Booking is strongly recommended due to the small kitchen, so you might need to plan ahead to avoid disappointment, especially with larger groups.
  • The bar area can feel a bit compact, which might get cosy on busier evenings and limit space for everyone to spread out.

A very traditional country pub on a quiet lane, popular with locals and walkers. Lovely beer garden in the summer, and a cosy interior with open fire on cooler days. The pub has a fairly small bar and separate dining area; all light wood with plenty of jugs, wall plates and other traditional pub paraphernalia. (Didn’t take interior pictures as didn’t want to be intrusive.) Really friendly hosts and a nice environment. McMullens isn’t my favourite real ale but it’s local and is kept/served well. Haven’t tried the food but it looked good. Noticed that they have ‘themed’ nights; most definitely would like to return for one of these sometime.
