About This Pub

Ah, The White Lion in Allesley – it's one of those classic country pubs that you stumble upon and think, 'This is just what I needed after a brisk walk.' From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really shines with those hearty favourites like roasts and seasonal dishes that leave you satisfied, and the desserts are apparently scrumptious enough to make you linger a bit longer. The atmosphere is spot on too, with its historic beams, warm log fires, and lovely gardens that make it a brilliant spot to unwind with a well-poured ale or a fine wine. Plus, being dog-friendly adds that extra touch of homeliness, perfect if you're out exploring the nearby paths or parks. On the flip side, though, service can be a mixed bag; some visits are full of cheerful, attentive staff who make you feel right at home, while others involve waiting around or dealing with staff who seem a bit off their game, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a relaxed meal. A couple of reviews mentioned meals taking ages or not quite hitting the mark, so it might pay to go on a quieter day if you can. Overall, it's a solid choice for a get-together with mates or family, as long as you keep expectations balanced – the good moments make it worth a visit, but it's not without its little niggles.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally spot on, with hearty roasts and delicious desserts that really hit the spot after a long walk.
  • It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with exposed beams, crackling log fires, and beautiful gardens – perfect for relaxing with a pint or a glass of wine.
  • Staff can be absolutely brilliant when they're on form, offering friendly service and going the extra mile, like helping out with questions or making families feel welcome.
  • Being dog-friendly is a big plus; it's great to pop in with your furry friend after a stroll in the nearby countryside.
  • The location's ace, right near Allesley Park and with easy access to Coventry's attractions, making it ideal for a day out.
Cons
  • Service can be inconsistent, with some experiences involving long waits to be seated or staff seeming a bit uninterested, which puts a dampener on things.
  • A few folks have mentioned disappointing meals, like roasts that didn't live up to expectations, especially when portions feel off or service drags on.
  • It can get a bit chaotic during busy times, such as holidays or weekends, leading to delays in food arriving or tables not being ready.
  • While the bar's well-stocked with cask ales and gins, not every visit feels seamless, with some reports of unhelpful responses to queries.
  • The historical charm is wonderful, but it might not suit everyone if the vibe feels a tad outdated or if you're after something more modern.

Went for a Father’s Day meal. When we arrived we waited to be seated but no one came. Many waiters walked past without acknowledging us. I had to find someone and ask to be seated. We ordered the kids roast which was a very good portion. We also ordered the adults roast which was very disappointing. We got a very small portion of beef and the accompanying items were bland and soggy. Wish I had ordered from the kids menu! First time visiting and it will be my last. Food was poor for the price and so was the service.

A large group of us went for dinner last night (12) and we had nothing but positive things to say. The food was excellent - there’s a large amount of choice and was delicious. The staff were brilliant - particularly our server (I think her name was Chloe) who answered every question anyone in our group asked (which was a lot!), she was attentive, knowledgable and had a laugh with us, couldn’t have asked for more. It is also a dog friendly pub with blankets, water bowls and treats. Next time we’re in Coventry we won’t hesitate to come back!

We visited on New Year's eve. The team were short staffed but still did an incredible job looking after us and our little girl. Special mention to Shannon she ensured we had everything we needed. Food delicious and the singer was great.

We booked this place for about Christmas Meal and got some good recommendations but the staff were incredibly rude and they didn't seem to care whether we were there or not. They were also unhelpful when we asked questions and our table wasn't even ready properly. The food then took so long to come and when it did, it was different to how it was described on the menu and didn't taste great. The meat was dry, the mash didn't taste cooked and the sauce was way too sweet. None of the food tasted good together and there was no flavour. The atmosphere was okay, the fireplace was pretty and cosy so I think if the food and service was better, it could've been a nice place.
