About This Pub
Ah, The Whippet Inn, what a lovely find in the heart of York! I've got to say, chatting about this place feels like recommending a mate's favourite local haunt. The food really steals the show – whether it's a succulent Sunday roast or a well-done steak with crispy potatoes, it's all about those hearty, flavoursome dishes that leave you smiling. And if you're popping in with your dog, you'll appreciate the pet-friendly setup; they've got a special room for it, plus little extras like blankets to keep everyone comfy. The staff are an absolute gem too, always polite and helpful, making sure you feel looked after from start to finish. On the flip side, though, the starters can sometimes feel a bit limited, and if you're in the dog area, it might get a tad chaotic if the pups aren't playing nice. Plus, the presentation of the food isn't quite as fancy as it could be, and watch out for those tables by the door – not ideal for your furry friend. All in all, it's a solid choice for a night out, with that high rating showing it's a crowd-pleaser, but it's worth keeping those minor downsides in mind for a balanced visit.

-
It's incredibly pet-friendly, with a dedicated area for dog owners and thoughtful touches like providing blankets for your furry friends, making it a welcoming spot if you're out with your pooch.

-
It's moderately priced with good value options, like their three-course menus that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank.
-
With a solid 4.5 rating from loads of visitors, it's clear this place knows how to deliver a memorable experience overall.
Cons
-
The starter options might not suit everyone's tastes, as some folks have mentioned not fancying what's on offer.
-
In the pet-friendly dining area, things can get a bit lively with multiple dogs around, which might be tricky if they're not getting on well.
-
The food presentation could do with a bit more polish to make it feel that extra bit special.
-
Certain tables, like the one near the door in the dog area, might not be the safest spot for your four-legged companion.

Had heard good things about the Sunday roast here - booked well in advance and had a courtesy call to remind me the day before (welcome since you're subject to a charge if you don't turn up...)
Unfortunately neither of us fancied the starter options but main choices on the day were chicken, pork and beef. When it arrived it looked great but I know I needed extra gravy (which was provided). The beef was incredible, perfectly cooked medium/medium rare and tender with a nice garlic/herb hint. The chicken was tasty too, and served with a different gravy/extras.
To note this is a set course meal (2 or 3), you aren't able to order the main as a standalone course without being charged for 2 courses (we asked as we were too full for dessert but had to battle through).
I find a lot of pub style Sunday roasts to be fairly disappointing usually however this one was worth the recommendations.
Pet-friendly restaurant with amazing food!! We were there for dinner, there seems to be a dedicated dinning room for pet owners - 5 dogs in the same room when we had dinner. Might be tricky if the dogs don't get along.
The table by the door of the dinning room might be a bit dangerous for dogs - waiters might not be able see the dog from outside when pushing the door. Maybe avoid that table.
Their new special with chocolate dry aged steak is amazing , even the sides are great. Everything looks small, but trust me, my wife and I were too full for dessert even with just the smallest size of the special (600g) for sharing.
One thing tho - their wallpaper is full of sexual hints, at least for the pet friendly dinning room.
Definitely coming back if we are back in York!
The service was excellent. Even though my English isn't very good, the staff politely assisted me with ordering.
The food was great—the T-bone steak was cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were crispy. Absolutely delicious! However, the presentation could be a bit more refined to make it even better.
Great meal here on Wednesday, the fillet and the brine soaked steak was fantastic. Along with amazing cocktails too! We will definitely be returning when back in York. They are also very dog friendly too and even brought out a blanket for our toy poodle! The waiter was very friendly and attentive too.
Delicious Sunday dinner, opted for the 3 course menu and were perfectly full but not uncomfortably so. Good choice of wines around the £30 mark with some significantly pricier if you choose. Vegetarian option delicious and came with all the trimmings, beef dinner also great. Sticky toffee pudding excellent. Service was good, very relaxing atmosphere and no rush between courses. Would definitely return
