I have to say, the first thing that struck me was the incredible Edwardian design; those grand rooms and beautiful carvings really transport you back to a bygone era, and it's clear why it's a grade two star listed building. It's brilliant for meeting up with friends, whether you're grabbing a beer after the races or just enjoying the lively vibe in the back rooms. The drinks are fairly priced, and they've got some decent options, including bar snacks that add a nice touch to the experience. On the downside, though, it can get a bit frustrating when it's packed and the service drags – you might end up queuing longer than you'd like with not enough staff on hand. Plus, the facilities aren't quite up to modern standards, and the beers are serviceable but don't exactly wow you. All in all, it's a place with heaps of character that I'd recommend for a visit if you're after that authentic pub feel, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations to enjoy the best bits without letting the rough edges spoil the fun.

The atmosphere is spot on, especially in the back rooms, with a lively vibe and a decent selection of beers, plus tasty bar snacks like those chipotle and black pudding sausage rolls that are worth trying.
Drinks are reasonably priced, including some nice options like Prosecco, and it's a welcoming spot for a catch-up or a relaxed evening.

Cons

Service can be a bit slow when it's busy, as there aren't always enough staff around to handle the crowds, which might leave you waiting a while for your round.
The toilets are showing their age and could do with a bit of a refresh – it's not a deal-breaker, but it's noticeable in an otherwise grand setting.

Great, large, old pub in city centre Liverpool close to Lime St Station. Probably past its prime nowadays but the place is still worth a visit just to see its grand rooms and wonderful decor.

Took a while to get served. Lots of customers but only a few serving. Beautiful building. Was sunny on the day we went and a lot of people were sitting outside too. Worth a visit. The beer I had was ok (cask ale) but nothing special

Great meeting up location, in the heart of Liverpool City Centre. Old world setting, beautiful wood panelling and carvings all around the walls. Restored to it's former glory as one of Liverpools oldest hostelries. Really interesting place to visit and enjoy traditional beverages as well as the some unusual real ales.

Met friends here after Aintree races. Got a table in the back room the ambience brilliant. Despite it being a very old pub they served drinks like patron and great Prosecco. Reasonably priced too. Toilets could do with a spruce but given the pubs age - most of the pub toilets in Liverpool the same!

Can't fault this place really - great atmosphere and a decent selection of beers etc. Bar snacks are pretty decent too - try the chipotle and black pudding sausage roll, you won't be disappointed. The rooms are beautifully preserved, it's like stepping back in time. If these walls could tell stories you'd hear the history of Liverpool.
