About This Pub
Ah, The Vigilant Inn – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a friendly neighbourhood hangout, you know? From the reviews I've seen, folks really appreciate the warm staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and the atmosphere sounds brilliant, especially on Sundays when they've got live bands playing. It's got that classic pub charm that makes you want to settle in for a chat and a few drinks. The Guinness gets a big thumbs up too, which is always a winner in my book. On the flip side, though, it's not without its downsides – some have mentioned it's a bit pricier than other spots nearby, which could add up if you're planning a longer session. Parking's another headache; it's either scarce or a tight fit, so you might end up walking a bit or finding an alternative. And while one review raved about a home-cooked carvery, another said there's no food at all, so it's probably hit or miss if you're after a meal. Overall, it's a place that does the basics well and has that community feel, but it's worth keeping those little niggles in mind before you head over. If you're in South Shields and fancy a pint with some music, give it a go – just manage your expectations on the extras!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
-
It's got a really great atmosphere, especially with live bands on Sundays – perfect for a bit of a singalong or just soaking in the vibe.
-
They serve a cracking Guinness, and from what I've heard, it's one of the highlights if you're after a proper pint.
-
If you're lucky, you might catch a home-cooked carvery that's been raved about – sounds like a real treat when it's on offer.
Cons
-
It can feel a tad expensive compared to other local pubs, which might put a dent in your night out budget.
-
Parking's a bit of a nightmare; there's not much of it, and what there is can be a tight squeeze, especially if you're in anything bigger than a car.
-
They don't seem to serve food regularly, which is a shame if you're hoping for a bite to eat alongside your drinks.

Went here by mistake. Thought we we going to see the fantastic Russ Tippins, but our information was totally erroneous as there was another band playing. Saw a friend who told me Russ was at the Cottage so we went there.
It is a decent place. Gets the bands in on Sunday night. Does a nice Guinness. Does not serve food.
Was there working but pub looks nice .. no parking though and the carpark at the back is a bit of a tight squeeze but I did have a big van
I personally find it expensive compared to other bars in the local area. Last behind the bar was lovely no issues with the service at all.
Carvery was amazing, (home cooked) lovely and friendly staff and a great atmosphere in the pub.
