About This Pub
Ah, The Ship Inn – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of what makes a good local spot in the UK. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff stand out as absolute gems; they're chatty, knowledgeable, and go out of their way to make sure you're looked after, which always makes for a top-notch visit. The atmosphere is just spot on too – think classic, old-school vibes that hark back to traditional pubs, perfect if you're a history buff or simply after that authentic feel. And on a sunny day, grabbing a seat outside with a refreshing drink is an absolute treat. But, let's be honest, it's not without its drawbacks. There's no food or coffee on offer, so if you're peckish or wanting something beyond the usual drinks, you might find yourself a tad disappointed. Plus, it does come across as very much a neighbourhood favourite, which is charming but could feel a bit exclusive if you're not from around there. Overall, with a solid 4.4 rating, it's clear this place does a lot right for those after a straightforward, friendly pub experience – I'd say it's worth popping in for a pint if you're in South Shields, just manage your expectations on the extras!

It doesn't serve food or coffee, so if you're after a bite to eat or something non-alcoholic, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
It feels very much like a local haunt, which is brilliant if you're in the know, but it might not suit everyone, especially if you're not familiar with the area or looking for something more touristy.

Some visits can be a bit hit-and-miss, with a few folks mentioning mixed experiences despite the high points.

Seating area outside to catch a bit of sun, with a nice cool Guinness 👌
Great pub service excellent by friendly staff
No food, no coffee. Proper pub.
This was a very mixed experience. I absolutely loved the staff the bar staff were friendly chatty and knowledgeable. So very welcoming, helpful and attentive. I would say it's a very local pub and not a one for tourists unless you are an history fan in that case its amazing, it's so old, classic and a fascinating history with many local historical artifacts.
If you are a gentleman or group of gentlemen you will love it and for the gentlemen guest and would five star recommend.
Unfortunately some of the gentlemen visitors made me as a lady guest feel very uncomfortable and unwanted and unwilling to return. I ordered some real ale and heard one of the gentlemen customers say women should stick to Women's places and women's drinks. Then listen to a diatribe to his friends how women can't do Men's jobs, as we aren't as strong and good enough and we should know our place. Which made me feel uncomfortable.
If you are a gentleman you will love it. Ladies I would stay away. It's sad because it's a fascinating place.
Great little pub, really friendly staff, good atmosphere
