About This Pub
Ah, The Derby – it's one of those classic pubs in South Shields that really captures that community spirit, you know? From what I've gathered, it's got this cosy, unpretentious charm where you can grab a pint at a great price and settle in to watch the match on one of their many screens. The staff seem genuinely lovely, always up for a chat, and the place is kept sparkling clean, which makes it a reliable spot for a casual get-together with mates. That said, it's got that strong local flavour, so if you're just passing through or new to the area, it might take a moment to warm up to you, and I've heard it's not the most comfortable for anyone venturing in on their own, especially women. There were a couple of stories about service slip-ups, like the heating being off during a game or getting cut off abruptly without a proper heads-up, which could put a damper on things. Overall, though, with a solid 4.4 rating, it's worth a try if you're up for a straightforward, no-fuss pub experience – just go in with the right expectations and you'll likely have a good time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The drinks are reasonably priced, like getting a pint for just £3, which is a steal compared to some nearby spots.
-
The bar staff are friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home once you're in.
-
It's spotlessly clean, which is always a plus when you're settling in for a drink or a catch-up.
-
A great spot for sports fans with loads of screens for watching football or horse racing.
-
The atmosphere can be quiet and pleasant, especially for a relaxed lunchtime meet-up.
Cons
-
It has a very local feel, so if you're not from around South Shields, it might come across as a bit unwelcoming at first.
-
Not the best place for someone popping in alone, particularly if you're a woman, as it can feel a tad negative until folks get to know you.
-
There have been gripes about things like no heating during events or poor handling of last orders, which can spoil the vibe.
-
Service might fall short in busy situations, like during a darts match, leaving you feeling a bit let down.

Visited with my Brother. It's very much a local pub for local people so if you are a tourist I wouldn't recommend. A tiny bit negative feeling until the clientele know you are local from the customers. I wouldn't go in alone as a lady but if you are a gentleman or group you would be fine. Bar staff were friendly and helpful. Decor was impressive and lots of TVs showing various sports. Some good deals on food. Toilets are clean and well maintained.
No heat during a dart match, no shout for last orders so went to the bar at 10.40 for a round of pints and shots to be told no (whilst a dart match was still in play) when no last orders was called. Staff turned music and TV off whilst a league match was in play. Disgusting from a home venue
Popped in for a couple of drinks and a catch up with my bestie. Drinks reasonably well priced, atmosphere quiet and pleasant for lunchtime. Bar staff friendly and welcoming and the bar was immaculately clean. Didn't have food this time but, we will be back.
Well the Derby is smack in the middle of The Nook,South Sheilds this bar far in large a sports bar, it boats a multitude of screen either to watch the football or horse racing.
The cost of a pint is 3.00 co sidering other places near by are charging 4.00 and 4.50 for Carling, so this I a decent bar. There is a pool table and darts boards should you wish to partake, there is a outside area for those who wish to have a cigarette (mind you I only saw 2 ashtrays on the far side of the yard, so no need to use the floor.
This is a family bar as when I visited there was some younger adults, and extremely well behaved.
They sue to do food some.time ago but I'm unsure if they still do, this why I have not marked any stars for food.
Overall a great place if you love sports.
Come in with the kids after a busy evening, we were all pretty desperate to use toilet facilities so thought while we were in there we'd grab a drink. Seemed friendly enough as we walked in. My partner went to the bar I took my two children to use the toilet. So they seen we've come in all together never said a thing. I come back to the bar to ask were we'd sit got sat down fine we'd at least been there ten minutes or so a man come over basically told us we needed to leave as kids wernt welcome which is fair enough but it's a good job at this point my partner hadn't of paid for the drinks. The young girl behind the bar had numerous opportunities to tell us this but instead I was left extremely embarrassed to publicly be told to leave infront of everyone there. Their loss of money though I suppose won't be back for sure .
