About This Pub

Ah, Harton Hop House – what a delightful spot it is, tucked away in South Shields. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really nails the craft ale scene with an impressive array of brews that had folks raving about trying new ones and even comparing them favourably to classics like Guinness. Pair that with some seriously good food – think fresh, generous portions that even handle vegan diets with ease – and you've got a winning combination for a laid-back evening out. The staff sound like absolute stars, all warm and welcoming, which makes it feel like you're popping round to a mate's for a pint rather than just another pub visit. It's dog-friendly too, which is always a bonus if you're out with your furry companion. On the flip side, though, it's only open five days a week, so you might have to plan around that, and without a website, it's not the easiest to get the lowdown beforehand. Still, with such high praise from everyone who's been, I'd say it's well worth a visit for a proper, enjoyable night – just keep in mind it might get a bit snug if it's a popular evening!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The selection of craft ales and real beers is absolutely superb – it's a real treat for ale enthusiasts with options like German drafts and Brew Dog brews that are smoother than your average pint.
  • The food is outstanding, with fresh, high-quality dishes that cater to all tastes, including plenty of tasty vegan options that impressed during a family gathering.
  • It's a lovely, relaxed spot with a chilled vibe, perfect for catching up with mates, and it's dog-friendly too, which makes it even more welcoming.
  • The staff are incredibly warm and helpful, always ready with a smile and great recommendations, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • Even the little details shine, like the most photogenic loo you'll ever see – it's quirky and adds a fun touch to the experience!
Cons
  • It's only open five days a week, which might be a bit of a letdown if you're planning a spontaneous visit on the closed days.
  • There's no website listed, so it can be tricky to check the menu or latest updates online before heading out.
  • As a smaller venue, it might get cosy during busier times, so if you're after a quiet corner, you could find it a tad packed.

I so wish I could give this place 10 stars as it throughly deserves it. I attended a new menu tasting night with my Boyfriend and Brother. The selection of real ales were amazing all so good, tried a few new ales loved them all. The food was second to none, the quality, freshness and the amount omg I defy anyone to be hungry after one of the flatbreads haha. My Brother and Boyfriend absolutely adored the Mexican hop dogs (not a typo haha) I was chatting with one of the staff and mentioned I was veggie and the first tasting platters were meaty. So they made me my own veggie platter just for me!!! I have been veggie over thirty years and this is only the second time something special was made for me!! So kind, thoughtful and touching they didn't let me be left out. Shows they genuinely care about their customers. The range of food for both veggie and meaty people is stunning, so fun, imaginative and inventive. The feta bread and blue cheese one were a complete revelation anyone needs to experience it. The Welsh rarebit was the best I have had, you could definitely taste the beer, it was creamy and tangy. I recommend it for a nibble alongside a pint haha. The staff were exceptional, made you feel wanted, valued and appreciated. We left feeling like old friends. Had a good giggle. Would highly recommend this to ladies for a lunch or evening out as it feels very safe and fun environment. The toilets were clean and well maintained. Also there was the original bread oven in there from when it was a bakery. Love the quirky decor. Will definitely return. I would be happy to go in alone.

They have German beer on draft!!! They have Brew Dog Black Heart on draft!! (some say it's smoother than Guiness) They have a lovely little place that's relaxed and chilled. Great to see a bar without the bland fodder like Fosters and carling, they broke the mold!! Thank goodness!!!

Amazing bar in South Shields with great offer of craft beer. Good selection of wine and gin. Had a family gathering there and enjoyed it well. They were well able to accommodate our vegan diet and provided good selection of vegan food, all tasty. Good vibe, good drinks and food, great, helpful and friendly staff. Defo recommended.
