About This Pub

Ah, The Trumpet – it's one of those pubs that really warms your heart with its focus on live music and that good old British pub spirit. From what I've gathered from folks who've been there, the jazz gigs and other performances are spot on, creating a lively buzz without any of the usual distractions. The staff and the crowd are dead friendly, making it easy to settle in and enjoy a pint of their excellent beers at a wallet-friendly price. It's got this timeless appeal, like stepping back into a bygone era of proper music appreciation. But, to be fair, it's not without its quirks – being cash only can throw a spanner in the works if you're not carrying notes, and a few have mentioned those raffle tickets feeling a bit forced, which might put some off. Overall, if you're up for a genuine, music-filled evening with great company, it's well worth a visit, but maybe plan ahead to avoid any minor frustrations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music is absolutely brilliant, especially for jazz enthusiasts – it's a proper gem for catching top-quality performances without any distractions like jukeboxes.
  • The staff and regulars are incredibly welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, with that warm, traditional pub vibe.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers, like the Holdens Amber Glow, and it's all at an inexpensive price, perfect for a casual night out.
  • It's got this rich musical history and charm that's kept alive, offering a genuine, old-school experience that's hard to find these days.
Cons
  • It's cash only, which can be a bit of a hassle if you're not prepared and prefer using cards or apps.
  • Some folks have mentioned unexpected things like raffle tickets added to drinks, which might feel pushy or off-putting if you're not in the mood.
  • The atmosphere can come across as a tad quirky or not quite everyone's cup of tea, depending on what you're after for a night out.

Lovely old pub with a rich musical history. Diane and Musti guarantee a very warm welcome and so do the regulars. Excellent beer. It's a cash only pub, keeping with tradition 😁

Im updating my review because I've just had another couple of nights in this wonderful pub. Please take note that cash is king - this is a CASH ONLY PUB. Please get cash out before going in to the pub and leave your modern frustrations at the door. Try the Holdens Amber Glow and there's a good cider on too. Please take proper CASH money with you, revel in the good old days! Original Review... Love this pub, it's history, it's traditions and all the great music it puts on. Diane and Musty are fabulous hosts. When visiting please remember this is a locals pub there are lots of characters in there. Also to be remembered, it costs a lot to put on free live music so please buy raffle tickets (they are usually added onto your first drink/ round anyway) and at the end of the night please put something (coppers, silver or gold coloured coins or notes) onto 'the tray' its for the band and helps keep music live! Remember, it's a CASH ONLY pub.

Weird place. Raffle tickets added to drinks prices it appeared followed by a tray for more money for the band. I don't enter raffles or any gambling system but was added and handed to me without any consent. Sharp barmaid also doing it I must say. Really puts you off sadly - either charge tickets or pay the band

Fantastic venue for live music, I have been going here on and off for 40 years and it still has the same charm and undying support for live music it always has had. The staff and owners are very welcoming and offer some nice local beers etc. I think this venue should be listed and protected for its musical heritage. Free entry to see live music after all these years, just donate what you can to help the bands when the tray comes round. ❤️❤️❤️

This place is amazing. Great live music, I saw an excellent Jazz band (Tim Amann with Sam Rogers) playing standards & some modern stuff & then the Martian Social Club the next day (kind of Zappa). The owners are really welcoming & friendly, infact the whole pub is friendly. Don't forget to buy a raffle ticket. Beer is good price BUT take cash as NO CARD MACHINE 🙂
