About This Pub
Ah, The Tollgate – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a welcoming haven in Romford, you know? From the moment you walk in, the staff go out of their way to make you feel at ease, with brilliant service that includes cheeky chats from the manager and attentive bar staff who keep everything running smoothly. The food's a real treat too; their sizzling skillets and burgers are spot-on, and they've got solid options for those watching their diet, all without charging an arm and a leg. Plus, it's nice to see them giving back to the community, whether that's through fundraising or lending out spaces for local doings. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of upset tummies from the grub, like that unfortunate incident with the fish and lasagne, so it's probably best to play it safe if you're picky about food hygiene. And the opening times can be a bit confusing with all those different listings, but overall, it's a solid spot for a pint and a chat – just go in with your eyes open and you'll have a lovely time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – from the manager Mark to the barmaids, they're warm, attentive, and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the welcoming vibe.
-
The food is a highlight; think sizzling skillets and flame-grilled burgers that hit the spot, with plenty of options for veggies and vegans, all at honest, fair prices.
-
It's a proper community spot, always up for fundraising and offering their function area for free to locals, making it feel like a real hub for get-togethers.
-
Great value deals and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for catching up with mates over drinks or enjoying a meal without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
There have been reports of dodgy food experiences, like one case of food poisoning from the fish and lasagne, which is a real shame and something to keep in mind.
-
The operating hours seem a bit muddled with varying times listed, so it might be worth double-checking before heading out to avoid any disappointment.

Absolutely love coming to The Tollgate — it’s got that perfect mix of a welcoming atmosphere, great drinks, and brilliant service. Mark (the manager) always goes above and beyond to make you feel at home, and the barmaid who works Saturdays is warm, attentive, and brings a really lovely energy to the place. Whether you’re popping in for a quiet pint or a weekend catch-up with friends, you’re guaranteed a great experience. Highly recommend!
I visited the tollgate for lunch and drinks and all I can say is wow ! The service I received by Mark and Tilly was amazing, they greeted us with lovely manners as soon as we walked in, the food was stunning, it arrived to the table piping hot and it was delicious! Tilly checked on us a few minutes after the food arrived and we thought that was super considerate, we are very much looking forward to our next visit !
I came to the Tollgate today with family/friends after not eating in this pub before. We all had different meals and everyone really enjoyed their meals . The Staff and Manager are very welcoming and the Chef was kind enough to stay later so we did not miss out on desserts. Great experience we all said we will be coming back.
Had lunch today with my friend. Food was lovely. Service was excellent staff always very friendly. Mark the manager came over to talk to us as he had seen us a few times recently. Shows that he is super interested in he's customers. Would definitely recommend
AVOID THE FOOD POISIONING:
Came here yesterday as a gift to my mother. We ordered the fish and the lasagne and was disappointed. We've visited the pub before and eaten here, sad to say will not be return for the food.
First of all for the fish which was for my mother and i tried after she stopped eating, the peas were completely cold, While the had a soft rubble like constancy. It appeared as tho the batter had been burned an in attempt to soften it the dish had been microwaved.
I myself had the beef and rewine lasagne, which while looking appealing was not. The garlic bread like the peas was cold and tasted more of oil then bread. The pasta itself while having it's flavour was swimming in oil, and burnt on the edges, making it a struggle to even get down. Yet we tried because we had paid the money.
As a frequent visitor who used to live just 5 minutes away and a fellow bar worker in london it's a shame to see when quality turns out like this. I've been bedridden all day throwing up since with what I can only assume is food poisoning from here as I hadn't eaten anything else thay day as I was looking forward to the meal.
