About This Pub
Ah, The Matapan – it's one of those pubs that really feels like a community hub in Dagenham, you know? From the website, it's clear they're all about fresh, quality ingredients and making everyone feel at home, whether you're popping in for a quick bite or settling in for the evening. Folks rave about the food; I mean, who could resist those sizzling plates or a hearty burger? It's got that traditional pub charm with a bit of extra flair, and the value is spot on for a night out without splashing the cash. The staff sound like a gem most of the time, going above and beyond to make sure you're sorted, especially if you're with family – think colouring sheets and all. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect; there have been a few tales of service not quite living up to expectations, like when things get a bit disorganised for events or someone at the bar isn't as on point. Still, with a solid rating from the crowd, I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep an eye out for those little bumps and you'll have a lovely time.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The food is absolutely spot on – think sizzling skillets and flame-grilled burgers that leave you wanting more, with fresh ingredients and great options for veggies and vegans.
-
Staff are a friendly lot, always ready with a smile and helpful advice, making it feel like a proper local hangout.
-
It's brilliant value for money, with daily offers and portions that are generous without breaking the bank.
-
A welcoming family vibe, complete with activities for the kids, so it's perfect for a relaxed meal with the whole crew.
Cons
-
There can be the odd slip-up with service, like staff not being as attentive as they'd like, which might leave you waiting a bit.
-
Booking for events or functions sometimes gets a bit muddled, with communication hiccups between the team.
-
A few minor niggles mentioned, such as the kids' options not always hitting the mark, which could disappoint if you're dining with little ones.

Really was lovely food. I love the sizzling plates. Had mixed grill and it really was nice. Can still taste it now. Staff lovely and helpful. Nice Dagenham pub. If rather go here than the wetherspoons ! Food much nicer here and good value for money. Compliments to the chef
Seemed like a very nice pub. Let down by someone who appeared to be a manager with redish hair who wasn't very attentive to customers waiting at the bar. Her partner going behind the bar to talk and land a kiss didn't come across as very professional, even if it was an off duty member of staff. My friend commented asking me if I had my invisibility jacket on which did lighten the mood of the situation.
On a positive we were looked after by another couple of staff members, fellow with long hair and a petite blondish lady, thank you for your service. Really on the ball, polite and efficient :)
I Booked the pub for a wake with a deposit a week before. I spoke to a supervisor who didn’t speak to management so when the party arrived the staff on duty had no clue what was going on. There was no food ready the poor staff on duty had run around they handle the situation the best they could. But unfortunately it wasn’t great as the slideshow didn’t work and got told over the phone all I had to do Was bring a cable.
The kitchen manager was fantastic she tried everything she could to make the slideshow work. And the gentleman from the bar.
But I’m not happy with poor communication from the supervisor , as we had to wait a long time for food. But they still managed to provide the best they could in the short time they knew. I don’t think it was value for money. But the sausage rolls were nice.
I hope for the future the supervisor can communicate better so this doesn’t happen again.
Took my family to have a meal, was greeted by the staff on entry and were very helpful with menu choices.
Food was quickly served, and tasted great!
My daughters were entertained with the colouring sheets and the staff went above and beyond!
Would definitely eat there again and would definitely recommend others to go too!
Delicious food, big portions and great value! Had the bigger version of the fish & chips, and it could easily be shared between two people. The vegan burger was top notch, full of flavour and not dry at all! Staff was very friendly and the service was fast.
The only downside was that the kids pasta was a bit dry, without much sauce on it. Can't really complain to be honest, got the offer that it costs £1 when you get another adult meal. Very good deal.
Another let down was the back beer garden, it is not looked after at all, but it got so much potential to be really nice. I hope that the current manager sort it out, as it would be really nice to sit on the outside with kids, away from the main road.

Great revamp, the pub looks really nice now. Food is still good, however, it took half an hour to arrive, even though people in the pub were just drinking at the time.
