About This Pub
Ah, the Robin Hood of St Albans, what a gem it is for anyone who appreciates a good old English pub. I've got to say, their real ales are something else; they're clearly passionate about keeping them in tip-top condition, with awards from CAMRA backing that up, and it's always a delight to try something like the Harvey's Sussex Best after a long day. The atmosphere is just right – friendly faces behind the bar and a welcoming crowd make you feel right at home, whether you're squeezing into the spacious seating inside or heading out to the beer garden for a bit of fresh air. It's conveniently tucked away near the station, so it's perfect for a quick stop or a pre-event gathering. On the flip side, if you're hoping for a hearty meal, you might be out of luck as it seems more focused on drinks than food, and things can get a bit hectic when the place is buzzing, leading to the odd wait for service. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for ale aficionados looking for that authentic pub experience, but keep in mind it might not suit everyone if you're after more variety in the grub department. I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area – you won't be disappointed with the drinks, that's for sure!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The real ales are absolutely spot on – award-winning selections like Harvey's Sussex Best are always well-kept and a real treat for any ale enthusiast.
-
It's got a lovely, welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and a spacious layout, making it easy to find a comfy spot whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening.
-
The beer garden is a brilliant addition, perfect for enjoying a drink outdoors on a sunny day in St Albans.
-
Conveniently located near the station, it's an ideal stop-off after a day out or before catching a train.
-
They've got a great variety of drinks beyond just ales, including ciders, gins, and wines, so there's something for everyone in the group.
Cons
-
It seems like food options are limited or non-existent, which might disappoint if you're after a proper pub meal rather than just drinks.
-
Service can get a bit stretched when it's busy, so you might have to wait a tad longer for your round, though the staff are generally helpful.
-
From what I've seen, it's more geared towards ale lovers, so if you're not into cask ales or traditional pub vibes, it might not be your cup of tea.

Actually it was for the cask ale.... no food! Two excellent beers well kept and served ... Harvey's Sussex Best £4.70 and Windsor & Eton Kohinoor IPA £5.30 .... just right after a good evening concert - choral works including Faure's Requiem and instrumental - violin and piano - at St Peter's, before the train home.
Popped in for a couple of pints before going to the cinema.
It was my first visit to the Robin Hood and I left very impressed indeed. Three cask ales were available and I tried them all. All were exemplary - they clearly take enormous pride in their beer and the number of CAMRA awards speaks volumes.
The service was quick and polite, and the garden at the back very inviting; barely two minutes’ walk from the station, this will definitely be my first stop the next time I’m in the area.
Nice enough pub with friendly staff and a welcoming crowd. There’s plenty of seating throughout with the whole place being spacious. With both the range of drinks and prices I had no complaints during my visit! A decent option in the town.
Made first ever visit today accompanied by Madge. CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2023 with lots of awards. Also excellent cider destination. Although they had Harvey's Sussex Best I went for a Pale Ale from Chiltern Brewery; a new one for me. Very good. One through lounge plus good size beer garden. Decided to stay formore rounds. Proper pub. Great locals.
Nice pub just out of St Alban train station. Full of local people as it’s their fav pub even CAMRA pub of the year. Cool collection of cask n ales. Plenty of seatings on floor as well as back beer garden. Service is good. Staff was ok coz he was busy. Nice location n nice atmosphere. God to wait for ur train here rather than at platform 😝
