About This Pub

Ah, the Cog and Wheel – it's one of those pubs in Newcastle that you hear about and think, 'Why not give it a go?' From what I've gathered chatting about it with folks, it's got this welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in for a casual Sunday roast or a fruity cocktail like the Dead Man's Daiquiri. The prices are spot on, too – you can get a filling meal without breaking the bank, and they've got decent veggie options that don't feel like an afterthought. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard a few tales of food coming out a bit overdone or undercooked, like burnt waffles or tough beef, which can really take the edge off. Service-wise, it's mostly fine, but there are moments when the team seems a tad put out if you need something extra, and waiting around for your food can feel longer than expected, especially if the menu's a bit limited for what you're after. Overall, though, if you're in the area and fancy a pint and a bite, it's worth swinging by – just keep your expectations in check and maybe skip the bottomless brunch if you're after something flawless.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food hits the spot with tasty options like a classic roast and refreshing drinks, all at reasonable prices – perfect for a budget-friendly meal out.
  • It's got a really good atmosphere, making it a welcoming spot for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • They offer solid veggie choices and generous portions of things like gravy, which is always a win for those looking for variety.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be hit or miss with things like burnt Yorkshires or undercooked veg, which puts a dampener on the meal.
  • The staff can come across as a bit short or bothered when you're just asking for the bill or another drink, which isn't the warmest experience.
  • Wait times can drag on, especially for things like Sunday dinner, and options might feel limited, leaving you wishing for more variety.

Nice roast, a shame the Yorkshires were all so burnt! But a good veggie option and lots of gravy. Staff were nice but did feel like we were bothering them whenever we asked for the bill/drinks etc. reasonably priced and a good atmosphere!

Went in for Sunday dinner checked to make sure they had other options for my friend and they only did Sunday dinner also the wait time was 55 minutes even though we booked in. Portion was small and the only warm thing on the plate was mash because it was probably microwaved anyways. Carrots were ridiculously hard to cut though and chew. We got dessert and the ice cream was half melted and the Portion was also small. We ordered coke abd got Pepsi I get it if you don't have coke but they could have said instead of substituting it and also the chairs were dirty and the tables were too close together and sticking.

Went for bottomless brunch about a week ago and was not worth the £35 we paid. Cocktails tasted like premixed stuff and the options were limited. Food was terrible and also limited options once again. I got the chicken waffle and it was burnt. Bacon on top was black underneath, the waffle was like a toaster one and was so overcooked and hard then smothered in golden syrup. My partner got a chicken burger and it was just bang average. For a 2 hour bottomless brunch we only stayed for an hour and that was because it took the bloke who worked there 10 minutes to bring menus after being seated, then took another 10/15 minutes after to order food, then good took about 20 minutes to make. In that time we had 3 drinks each. 2 cocktails, 2 house lager and 2 vodka cokes. Honestly not worth the money. Won’t be returning

We arrived and felt like we’d instantly annoyed the guy who served us. The carrots and parsnips weren’t honey glazed, the beef was over cooked and tough, but all the veg was undercooked and hard, our cauliflower cheese was undercooked with no cheese, we managed to get it swapped but it came back covered in nacho cheese. They cleared all the tables around us before ours despite sitting there for a good 40 minutes after finishing. We didn’t get the option to remove the service charge or even view our bill they just gave us the card machine with the amount on it… wouldn’t rush back used to be regulars, really disappointed

Classic Cog & Wheel was absolutely filling and tasty for the price of £9.50. I will definitely get this again if I come back. Dead man's Daiquiri was also a refreshing fruity drink (£8.30)to complement the meal. My friend ordered Fish & Chips, I took a small bite and found it flavourful unlike most places. So I highly recommend this place as it is a real value for money.
