About This Pub

Ah, The Swan in Burnley – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? Tucked away in the town centre, it's got this rich history dating back to the early 1800s as an old jail, and you can still see the cells if you pop into the gents – adds a bit of character that makes it more than just another watering hole. The drinks are spot on, with a solid range of cask ales and the like, all at prices that won't break the bank, and it's an absolute treat for a pint before a Burnley match or getting stuck into some karaoke upstairs. The staff are dead friendly, and the crowd's welcoming, which makes for a right good night out with mates. But, to be fair, I've heard a few grumbles about ID policies feeling a bit off, like not accepting certain foreign IDs, which could put some off. Overall, it's a solid choice for a laugh and a chat, as long as you go in with your eyes open to the occasional slip-up – worth a visit if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing, especially for karaoke nights and with the DJs spinning tunes on weekends – it's a proper lively spot for a good night out.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, which really adds to the community vibe.
  • Great selection of cask ales, lagers, wines, and spirits at inexpensive prices, so you can enjoy a pint without worrying about the wallet.
  • Handy location in the heart of Burnley town centre, just a short stroll from Turf Moor, perfect for pre-match drinks or a casual catch-up.
  • Loads of historical charm with its origins as an old jail – spotting the cells in the gents' is a fun little quirk that makes it stand out.
Cons
  • There have been issues with ID checks, like not accepting non-UK forms, which has left some feeling unfairly treated and put a damper on their visit.
  • A few mentions of inconsistent experiences, such as potential service hiccups, though it's not widespread from what I've seen.

Visited this pub following the Burnley game and went to the bar for a drink, young girl with blonde hair IDed me and I handed them my Irish passport card. After inspecting it for a few minutes, they said they cannot accept a non-UK form of ID, clearly blatant discrimination. In my 5 years in England I have never, ever had a problem with this form of ID. The most concerning aspect of this is I wasn’t offered to provide an alternative, which I did have on me, writing this review so this doesn’t happen to anyone else. It’s clear only British people with a British form of ID can drink in here.

Being a Burnley girl, I've spent quite a few fabulous party nights in the Swan. As soon as you walk through the door, the atmosphere is different from the last place you came from. You find yourself bopping along with well loved tunes on the weekend or being welcomed by an old friend. The staff are on point & know every drink going. Plus, the busy periods are quickly approached behind the small bar, and they always have smiles for everyone.
