About This Pub
Ah, The Swan – what a gem it is in York! I have to say, stepping into this place feels like discovering a little slice of history that's still very much alive and kicking. It's got that rare, unspoilt charm with its two-roomed setup and preserved interior, making it an ideal spot for sinking into a comfy seat and enjoying a quality pint without any of the modern frills getting in the way. From what folks are saying, the beer is where it truly shines, with a serious selection that caters to all tastes, and the staff go out of their way to make everyone feel included, which is just lovely for building that community spirit. It's not just about the drinks though; there's a nice beer garden for sunnier days, and it's dog-friendly, so it's great if you're out and about with the family pet. On the flip side, it's a short stroll from the city centre, which means it might not be the first stop if you're hopping between the big sights, and the operating times can be a bit muddled, so I'd recommend checking ahead. Overall, it's a proper pub that does the classics so well, and I'd definitely pop back for another round – it's one of those places that leaves you with a smile and a story to tell.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely spot on – a fantastic range of ales, both cask and keg, that really hits the mark for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
-
It's got that cosy, traditional vibe with a beautifully preserved Grade II listed interior, making it feel like a warm hug from the past while still being a lively spot.
-
The service is genuinely friendly and welcoming, with staff who make you feel right at home, whether you're a local or just popping in for a visit.
-
Dogs are welcome, which is brilliant if you're out for a stroll with your furry friend, and there's a lovely rear beer garden for when the weather's nice.
-
It's a real community hub where conversation flows as freely as the drinks, and it's earned its stripes as a York CAMRA favourite – always a good sign!
Cons
-
The location's a tad out of the way, just outside the city walls, so it might take a short walk to get there from the main attractions, which could be a minor hassle if you're exploring on foot.
-
The operating hours seem a bit confusing from what I've seen, with some inconsistencies in the schedule – worth double-checking to avoid disappointment if you're planning a visit.
-
The website has some odd, spammy links mixed in, which feels a bit off and doesn't quite match the charm of the pub itself, so you might want to look elsewhere for info.

A great old time pub. You don’t find many like this anymore. Good beer, a nice quiet atmosphere. Very enjoyable…
Uncomplicated neighbors pub with a nice selection of beers and gins. Comfortable sitting areas, and dogs welcomed too.
A decent just off centre more locals bar with a very serious decent beer selection both keg and cask. Nice vibes too and liked it stayed open to 11.20 last orders Friday night which was just right. Def would return next time in York
This is one of my favourite York pubs. Been here a few times but it is a few minutes walk out of the city walls. A CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular. Madge sat us down in a lovely rear lounge, it is Heritage pub. Well worth visiting. There is a rear beer garden.
Another great pub in the neighborhood, a perfect pairing with The Slip Inn for a few pints (or more). Met the owner, great guy. This is a properly rustic pub that fits the area so well. Was told this is the “South Bank” and it was my favorite part of York. Anyway, an extensive selection of draft and cask. Had a great pint of Landlord. Some quality locals/regulars in the pub towards the end of the night. A lot of fun here. Stories for life.
