About This Pub

Oh, Plonkers in York is one of those unassuming spots that really grows on you once you step inside – it's like finding a hidden favourite down a quiet street. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food steals the show; think juicy steak and ale pies or those flavour-packed Sunday roasts that hit the spot after a day of exploring. The team there are spot on, always up for a chat and getting your order out in no time, which makes for a relaxed and enjoyable visit. It's got that classic pub charm with moderate prices that don't break the bank, and with so many people raving about it, you can see why it's a go-to for a good meal and a pint. That said, it's not without its quirks – the website's a bit of a mess right now, so you might have to wing it or give them a ring to sort out the details. All in all, if you're after a proper York outing with great grub and a friendly face, I'd definitely recommend popping in, but maybe double-check those opening times first to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

  • It's a cosy little spot in York that's easy to overlook but packs a welcoming atmosphere and great value for the price.

Cons
  • The website's currently inaccessible, which could make it tricky to check the menu or book ahead before heading out.
  • There seems to be some confusion around operating hours, as the info suggests it might be closed at times, even though it's meant to be open most days.

This is one of those little gems that are small-fronted and often overlooked. Miss it and miss out. We called in for drink and food at teatime. It was quiet, but friendly welcome from staff member who served us a nice pale ale and some really good food. The steak & ale pie was awesome. You literally couldn't have got any more steak in it if you tried. Served with real, well cooked, chips (not fries!) and peas. Delicious, and I really struggled to finish it. My wife had the biggest spicy veggie burrito I have ever seen. She said it was great too - I was too full to try it! Background playlist was my era music, so felt quite at home. Gonna try and get back in before we leave at the weekend.

Born in York, Lived in Spain for 20 years, Enjoyed Plonkers on several occasions, first time for 6 years recently after York races. Around 20 of us were served an excellent meal, and despite many varied orders, everyone was served within a few minutes, and all were completely happy with their food. Prices for central York were competitive, drinks excellent choices, staff first class. If I could rate higher I wouldn't hesitate. It's a MUST VISIT. Thank you Plonkers, We WILL be back. Oh and I won at the races 😜

We ordered the chili con carne and steak & ale pie. Both were really tasty and juicy! Chips were very nice. Fast service too. Would definitely recommend!

We were desperate for a Sunday roast, we were able to book a table an hour beforehand. It was delicious, my son had a pizza which was delicious. The roast the rest of us had lived up to expectations 😋. The staff were all so friendly. Would highly recommend.

We were amazed by their Sunday Carvery (aka Sunday Roast). The gravy was soooooooo flavourful and the Yorkshire Pudding was perfect. We had their pork and chicken for our Sunday Carvery - both juicy and tasty. The portion was really good and the variety of the vegetable was impressive. The Fish and Chips wasn’t bad as well, but the Sunday Carvery was definitely the star of the meal. Will definitely go back in the future!
