About This Pub

Oh, you know, the Golden Ball in York is one of those pubs that just warms your heart the moment you walk in – it's York's first community co-operative spot, and you can really feel that sense of togetherness in the air. The historic interior, with its beautifully preserved Victorian features, is an absolute treat; it's like stepping into a bygone era, and it's even listed in CAMRA's national inventory, which speaks volumes. They've nailed the ale selection too, with a focus on locally produced cask beers that rotate regularly, so there's always something new to try, and they pair it nicely with local treats like pork pies and vegan options. It's brilliant for catching up with mates or popping in for an event, whether that's an open mic night or a community gathering – the buzz is infectious. On the flip side, it can get a tad crowded in the smaller spaces, especially when things are lively, and I've heard a few folks say the beers don't always hit the mark for them, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Still, with its friendly staff and that genuine community feel, it's well worth seeking out if you're in York and fancy a proper, down-to-earth pint – just go with an open mind and you'll likely have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic interior is an absolute delight, with its Grade II listed Victorian layout and beautiful tiled bar that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time.
  • They've got a cracking selection of hand-pulled cask ales, focusing on quality local brews that change regularly – perfect for ale enthusiasts looking for something fresh.
  • It's a real community hub, hosting all sorts of events like open mic nights, weddings, and charity fundraisers, which gives it such a warm and welcoming vibe.
  • The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always up for a chat, and they support local businesses by serving things like locally-sourced pork pies and fresh eggs.
  • With its high ratings, it's clear this place has a loyal following, making it a top spot for a relaxed pint in the heart of York.
Cons
  • The space can feel a bit snug, especially during events, which might leave you standing if it's busy – not ideal for those who prefer a bit more room to spread out.
  • Some visitors have mentioned that the beers aren't always spot on, so it might not satisfy everyone looking for the absolute best brews out there.
  • The operating hours vary a touch, and it seems like it might not open as early as some other pubs, which could be a downside if you're after a midday drink.

A classic old boozer full of character with great cask ale. Well worth staying for a few scoops. Such a friendly place to drink at.

Came here for an open mic event, with local musicians performing their songs. The atmosphere was amazing, even though the room was tiny and we didn't find a place to sit down. The beers are not the best, but this place is definitely worth visiting for this particular event!

Managed a few day's away from a manic lifestyle and discovered this absolute gem in York, less than two minutes from where I'm staying as well, double bonus! 😁 Superb ales, fantastic bar staff, awesome open mic night on a Monday. Absolutely worth seeking this place out when visiting York I can assure you. 😁 Pubs how they used to be and should remain.

The Golden Ball is a traditional Victorian backstreet local. The interior was altered and improved in 1929 it is thought to be the most complete surviving interwar scheme by John Smith's and is grade ll listed. There is a wide variety of beers, lagers, and cider, including five hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones that we sampled on our visit were in excellent condition. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. This lovely cosy multi-room pub has board games and a bar billiards table in the front room. The pub has a nice outside seating area and is dog friendly. A visit is highly recommended.
