About This Pub

Ah, the Cock & Bottle in York – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a warm hug when you step inside, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are top-notch, always greeting you with a smile and making sure you're looked after, which really sets the tone for a great visit. The drinks are a highlight too; they've got some properly kept cask ales and a good range of draught options that folks rave about, especially if you're into your traditional brews. And let's not forget that cosy coal fire – it's perfect for those chilly evenings, though you might end up smelling of smoke, which some love and others might not. It's got TVs for the sports fans and even outside seating for sunnier days, plus it's buzzing with events like quizzes that bring people together. On the flip side, it does have that old-school charm that could feel a tad outdated if you're after something more contemporary – it's like stepping back in time, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. The ales are reliable but don't expect anything wildly exciting, and if food's your main draw, well, it's not really on the menu here from what I've seen. All in all, it's a solid spot for a casual get-together, especially if you're in York and fancy a pint in a welcoming, no-fuss environment – I'd say give it a go if you're up for that authentic pub experience, but keep in mind it might not tick every box.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking selection of well-kept cask ales and draught drinks that hit the spot every time.
  • It's got that cosy, traditional vibe with a coal fire going, perfect for a relaxing evening or catching up with mates.
  • There are TVs showing sports and outside seating for when the weather's nice, adding to the laid-back atmosphere.
  • The place is great for social events like quizzes, with a friendly crowd that makes newcomers feel welcome.
Cons
  • It feels a bit stuck in the past, like time's forgotten about it, which might not appeal if you're after something more modern.
  • The drinks are solid but nothing groundbreaking – the cask ales are well-kept, yet they don't quite wow you with variety or innovation.
  • There's not much on the food front mentioned, so if you're looking for a proper meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
  • The website's pretty basic, just the name really, so it's not the easiest for checking out what's on offer before you go.

It's been along time since I have been in this pub,so was excited to return.I walked in the door and it was like time had stood still. The place was exactly the same.Like it was stuck in a time warp. Before I get to the nitty gritty. The bar staff were lovely, welcoming and extremely friendly.Heres the BUT....The place is in desperate need of a bit of TLC.The same toilet roll holder was broken in the ladies and bear in mind it's been years since I've been here. But the biggest thing is the furniture O.M.G!!!!I really had NO words. Its a friendly neighbourhood pub but it's tired.Do the place a favour.Buy some new seats and give it a lick of paint.I'm sure the locals wouldn't mind. That said its still worth a visit in.

The cock & Bottle is a traditional pub there is a good choice of draught drinks including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales the ones I sampled on my visit were in excellent condition. There are TVs for watching Sport anf outside seating at the front of the pub. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.

Went there for the Sunday quiz. Great atmosphere, lovely friendly staff made strangers feel as welcome as regulars. Didn't eat here so can't comment on food and we walked so no idea about parking
