About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Summer House – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot every time. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food is an absolute standout; whether it's their awesome Nepalese and Desi dishes or those legendary curries, folks have been raving about it for years, with some saying it's the best in the Midlands. The staff sound like a delight, always welcoming and making sure everything runs smoothly, which really adds to that homely feel. Picture yourself by a roaring fire on a chilly evening or out in their massive garden on a sunny day – it's got that perfect mix of cosy and outdoor charm. At inexpensive prices, it's easy on the wallet too, which is always a plus. On the flip side, it does get packed, so booking ahead is a must to avoid disappointment, and with it only open six days a week, you might have to plan around that. Plus, without a website, it's not the easiest to check details, but honestly, once you're there, it's all worth it. If you're after a solid pub experience with great grub and a welcoming atmosphere, this one's a winner – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – their Nepalese and Desi menu, especially the curries, is top-notch and often hailed as the best in the Midlands.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere, with a roaring fire for cosy evenings and a massive garden that's perfect for summer drinks.
  • Great value for money as it's inexpensive, so you can enjoy a cracking meal without breaking the bank.
  • It's clearly a popular spot, with high ratings and plenty of positive buzz, meaning it's always buzzing with good energy.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy, so you'll probably need to book ahead to snag a table, which might put a damper on spontaneous visits.
  • They're only open six days a week, so if you're planning a Sunday outing, you might have to check the exact hours or find it's closed.
  • No website means it's a bit tricky to get the latest info online, so you might end up relying on phone calls or just turning up.

I've visited the Summer House for both beers and food at various occasions and it does both brilliantly. Most recently, a visit with my wife at 5pm on a Thursday, we'd booked a table in advance as it does get busy. This proved to be well advised as on arrival, many of the tables were reserved. The food here is delicious, the service quick - no sooner had we ordered, our starter of poppadums had arrived, no sooner had we finished that the main was with us. Staff are polite and friendly, and will accommodate - for example I wanted to try the chicken tikka masala but I'm a fan of spice, on request they upped the heat of my meal which gave it the kick I enjoy. The Tikka Masala was sweet and filling; a change from the Chicken Madras (also delicious) that I'd usually have. The garlic and coriander naan was perfect for mopping up the sauce. Alongside the amazing food, the Summer House have a good range of cask ale, including Enville Ale, St Austell's Proper Job and Wye Valley's HPA and Butty Bach. You are guaranteed a good pint here, the Summer House is in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2025 and has had ale in great condition available for many years. I had the Proper Job which goes well with a curry! Price-wise, food at the Summer House is affordable. We're making this a regular recently.

We’ve been coming here for nearly 20 years and having curry here since it started over 11 years ago. It never disappoints! Despite it not being our local anymore, we love coming over from Birmingham; the curry is in our opinion, the best in the Midlands. Jane and the team are friendly and welcoming so it always feels like home to us ☺️

What a gem! We enjoyed delicious food, sat by a roaring fire. The landlady and other staff were all very welcoming and we loved the friendly atmosphere. We took a look at the massive garden area out at the back which must be a great place to sit on a summer's evening. We will definitely return when we are back in the area and would highly recommend it.
