About This Pub

Ah, The Station Inn – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper gem tucked away in the hills near Kendal, and I'd happily chat about it over a pint with mates. From what I've gathered from the reviews and their website, they really nail the basics: the food is a highlight, with generous portions and plenty of choices for veggies and vegans, and stories of fabulous meals like haggis bonbons or sausage and mash make it sound like a treat. The staff come across as genuinely friendly and attentive, creating that warm, homely vibe that's perfect after a day out in the countryside, and being dog-friendly adds a nice touch for anyone out walking. Plus, the location's brilliant – right by the train station with stunning views from the beer garden – it's an easy spot to unwind or even crash for the night in their clean, cosy rooms. But, let's be fair, it's not all roses; a few folks mentioned some dishes falling a bit flat, like bland chicken, and the place can get a bit squished when it's busy, not to mention those hygiene slip-ups with the dogs. Overall, though, with a solid 4.4 rating from heaps of reviews, it's a place I'd recommend giving a go – just keep an eye on those details and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on, with a brilliant selection that caters to all tastes – loads of vegetarian and vegan options that really stand out, and dishes like Hunter’s Chicken that folks rave about.
  • It's a proper welcoming spot with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, plus it's dog-friendly and has a cosy atmosphere, especially with that nice coal fire keeping things warm on chilly days.
  • Location is a winner – just a short walk from Oxenholme train station, surrounded by stunning countryside, and they've got a beer garden with gorgeous views, making it ideal for a relaxing pint after a walk.
  • Rooms are clean and comfortable for overnight stays, and it's family-friendly with an outdoor play area, so it's great for a quick getaway or a base for exploring the area.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be hit or miss; for instance, the chicken in certain meals was a bit tough and lacking flavour, so it might not always live up to expectations.
  • The space can feel a tad cramped at times, which might make it uncomfortable if it's busy, and there are concerns about hygiene, like staff handling dogs without washing hands properly.
  • Operating hours aren't clearly listed, which could be a hassle if you're planning a visit and want to make sure it's open.

Stayed here overnight to catch early train to Manchester. Upon first seeing it I thought it would be old and smelly inside. I was quite impressed with the old English style of pub and how clean and cozy the rooms were. Had dinner and it was quite good. A nice pint and a quality red to top it off. So good to see these old pubs live on with the owners keeping the heritage style with clean, comfortable and cozy rooms and good food on premises. Staff were very friendly and accommodating as well. c

On holiday from the states, and I would come again just to have dinner and dessert at The Station Inn! I had the Hunter’s Chicken and ate every bite. I’m really not exaggerating when I say it’s the best meal I’ve had in the UK since arriving two weeks ago in London. We’ve had a lot of good food during our time in London and as we’ve made our way north, but this has been my favorite. Amazing food would have been enough for a good review, but our server, Sam took such good care of us and was so friendly, we would come back just to say hi! Loved it. Wholehearted five stars!

Ate here after visiting the viaduct for the day and hearing everyone rave about it ..food was great, big portion. Allow dogs which is great. A bit on the small side for us as felt cramped..Lovely little place tho,. Believe you can stay in their car park too which has access to loos.

I went to the restaurant and ordered some pasta. The sauce was good but the chicken was a bit hard and bland. The service was good. Sanitary can be improved. The waiters touch dogs while working and don’t wash their hands after. However, the waiters were nice.

Went for food. Had the haggis bonbons, sausage and mash and seafood pie. All fabulous! The beer was also really good. All the staff were super and the inn is lovely. Highly recommended. Will be back and hopefully stay there next time.
