About This Pub

Ah, The Punchbowl Hotel – it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper British pub experience. I've got to say, the food really steals the show; whether it's the traditional grub or that legendary sticky toffee pudding, everything comes out piping hot and full of flavour, and it's clear the team puts real care into it. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and making sure you're looked after, which adds to that welcoming, family-run feel. Plus, with amenities like pool and darts, it's brilliant for a fun evening with mates. On the accommodation side, the rooms are tidy and comfortable, ideal if you're exploring the Lake District, and the breakfast sets you up nicely for the day. But it's not without its little niggles – pity about the no-dogs policy in the rooms, as it might put off some travellers, and sorting out the opening times can be a bit of a faff since they're not spelled out clearly. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone after good value and a genuine, homely vibe; I'd definitely pop in again for a pint and a plate!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty traditional British dishes with generous portions, and that Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding is a must-try; it's pure comfort in a bowl!
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere with a proper pub vibe – pool table, darts, and even dogs are welcome in the bar area, which is great for a relaxed evening.
  • The accommodation is clean, comfortable, and well-located, perfect for a quick getaway near Kendal and the Lake District, with a smashing breakfast to boot.
  • Value for money is excellent, especially for families or groups, with safe parking and easy access to the M6.
Cons
  • Accommodation doesn't allow dogs, which is a shame if you're travelling with your furry friend, even though they're welcome in the bar.
  • Operating hours aren't clearly listed, so you might need to check in advance to avoid missing out on food service, which wraps up fairly early.
  • The website feels a bit basic and outdated, making it tricky to get all the details you need at a glance.
