About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Ring O Bells – it's one of those pubs that feels like a step back in time, right in the heart of Kendal, and I reckon it's a real gem for anyone who appreciates the classics. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by that lovely traditional setup, with open fires crackling away in the winter months, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a long day. The staff are just brilliant; they're so approachable and make you feel like part of the furniture, sharing a laugh or a bit of local gossip over a pint. They've got an impressive range of real ales on tap, including some cracking ones from local breweries, and if you're not in the mood for alcohol, there are non-alcoholic beers, fresh coffees, and teas to choose from. The food's another highlight – it's all home-cooked with fresh, local ingredients, and things like their lasagne or Sunday roast have got rave reviews for being delicious and good value. Plus, it's great that they welcome dogs, so it's ideal if you're out for a walk in the area. On the flip side, though, the hours can be a bit confusing at times, so you might find yourself planning ahead to catch them open, and it's a smaller place, which means it might not suit if you're after something more buzzing or spacious. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening, where the focus is on good drinks, hearty food, and genuine hospitality – I'd say give it a go if you're in Kendal and fancy a proper pub experience without any pretence.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that wonderful traditional vibe, with original features and a cosy open fire that makes you feel right at home on a chilly evening.
  • The staff are absolute gems – friendly, welcoming, and always up for a chat, just like chatting with old mates behind the bar.
  • A cracking selection of real ales from local breweries, plus other drinks like lagers, spirits, and even non-alcoholic options for those driving or taking it easy.
  • The food is spot on – home-cooked with fresh local ingredients, and they've got a brilliant Sunday roast that's proper hearty and affordable.
  • It's pet-friendly, so you can pop in with your furry friend for a pint without any fuss.
Cons
  • The opening hours can seem a bit muddled from what I've seen, so it's worth double-checking before you head out, especially if you're planning a visit on a whim.
  • Being a small, historic spot, it might feel a tad cramped if you're after a lively night with a big group, as it's more suited to intimate gatherings.
  • Food service is only available on certain days and times, so if you're hoping for a meal, you'll need to time it right or you might just end up with drinks.

What can I say except traditional old boozer. Cracking conversation with Tony the landlord. Diane his wife totally hilarious! Ray, Paul and Co proper old school boozer clientele. Nice one. Highly recommend for a quality pint!

A small pub with no frills bit a serves delicious home cooked food. We had Cumberland sausage and mash. Tuesday night was quiet but a friendly owner was welcoming. No blaring juke box and range of real ales were on offer. I was introduced to two local whiskies. The pace for food service was relaxed and our anticipation was high. They delivered on taste. Highly recommend and it was not overpriced.

Great traditional pub. Excellent food menu and the food is awesome. I had the lasagne and it was delicious. The lady behind the bar was lovely and the regular patrons chatted away to me. Lovely comfortable place for a drink, food and a chat. Just how a pub should be. Thank you all for being so nice to this Aussie travelling through UK.

I loved this pub - what a slice of history! There's graffiti on the window from 1824 and a message written on new years day. The guy behind the bar was very helpful and helped us take pictures of it from good angles. Theres multiple rooms and lots of original features. The staff were friendly and let us have an order of roast sides which weren't on the menu. These were delicious.
