About This Pub

Ah, The Stag's Head in Great Doddington – it's one of those pubs that just warms you up from the moment you step inside. From the reviews, it sounds like they've got the food side nailed, with folks raving about the tasty tomato soup, spot-on pizza, and hearty pork belly that make for a proper satisfying meal. The service is what really stands out; the team seems genuinely lovely, always smiling and quick to help, whether it's sorting out a table swap or keeping things fun for the little ones during a busy Sunday lunch. It's spot on for family days out or even bigger dos like weddings, where they've impressed with their private room and accommodating vibe. On the flip side, a couple of comments mentioned that some dishes, like a simple jacket potato, didn't quite deliver on size for what you're paying, and there was a minor grumble about the gravy being a bit off. Still, overall, it's a solid choice if you're after a cosy spot with good grub and a welcoming atmosphere – I'd say it's worth popping in for a pint and a bite, just keep an eye on those portions to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, with standout dishes like their tomato soup, pizza, and pork belly that really hit the spot.
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and attentive, going out of their way to make everyone feel at home, whether you're there for a casual meal or a special occasion.
  • It's a cosy and inviting spot, perfect for a relaxed get-together or even hosting events like weddings in their private room.
  • Great value overall, with a menu that offers good quality at moderate prices, and they're flexible with things like table changes if needed.
Cons
  • Some dishes might disappoint on portion size, like a jacket potato that felt a bit sparse for the price, which could leave you wanting more.
  • There might be occasional inconsistencies in the food, such as gravy that's a tad bitter, though it's not a major issue for most.

What a lovely venue! We booked their private room for our wedding reception and the team did not disappoint! The food was absolutely beautiful, the service was on point and the staff were so accommodating! 10/10 would recommend this venue for any do and certainly will continue to come back! Thank you for making our little wedding extra special!

Great looking pub but the my food was not to standard. Order a jacket potato 🥔 with cheese and beans for about £13. Nice size potato but you could count the number of baked beans and grated 🧀 on ten fingers. Very disappointing for the price paid.......3/10 for food.

Wow, what a lovely place!!! Delicious food and really cosy interior. Tomato soup was sooo good and pizza second to none. Pork belly ideal and Yorkshire pudding great. I would only made gravy a little less bitter but that was me. Great place!!!

Delicious Sunday lunch last week with the in laws. We didn’t like the table we were initially sat at (there was a low wall/shelf that we thought could be risky) so we asked to move and we were sat at a very light, open table near the bar which was preferred. I had the salt and pepper squid for starter, and it was light and tasty, not greasy at all. The pork belly bits were not a favorite of the group, but Cauliflower bang bang was a nice alternative. We all chose the Steak and ale pie for main - winner!! This is the best pie I’ve had in a long while. Not a brakes special, this was a thick slice of a pie, and it was top to bottom full of steak 🤤 To finish the meal, Affogato was on the menu which I hadn’t tried before, but love coffee, so went for it. I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t usually like ice cream but it was different and I enjoyed it. The brownie looked scrumptious - I had a bit of food envy! Walt was our server: he was really friendly and made sure that we had everything we needed. Most importantly, he put up with our banter and engaged with us - harder to find that you think! Will certainly return for Sunday lunch again 😊👌🏻

What a wonderful Sunday lunch experience! The staff couldn't have been more welcoming. Every single member of staff was helpful, smiley and just absolutely lovely. They were also really attentive and fun with my 8 year old daughter despite being busy with some big parties. Due to one of our party having a dairy allergy, they double checked with the chef what she could safely eat. This was greatly appreciated. The food was reasonably priced and delicious. The brownie was incredible. Thank you! It's been a long time since we had such first class service.
