About This Pub

Ah, The Stag – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper North London favourite, with its roots going back to 1874 and that family-owned charm making everything feel so welcoming. I've got to say, the food really shines through in the reviews; those wings and lamb chops sound like absolute winners, and the Sunday roasts get rave mentions for being spot on. Pair that with a cracking beer garden that's buzzing with events in the summer, and you've got a place that's perfect for unwinding after a walk in Hampstead Heath. On the flip side, it's not all perfect – a couple of folks have mentioned some dishes falling short, like chewy meat or soggy Yorkshires, and it might sting the wallet a bit if you're not in the mood for a splurge. Still, with such a solid average rating and that friendly service, I'd reckon it's well worth a visit for anyone looking for a good old British pub experience, just maybe keep an eye on what you order to avoid any disappointments.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with standout dishes like those incredible wings and lamb chops that keep you coming back for more.
  • It's got a warm, historic vibe that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, especially in that fabulous beer garden with its heated cabanas and summer BBQs.
  • They've got a cracking selection of craft beers, cocktails, and even gluten-free options, making it easy to find something for everyone.
  • Being family-friendly until 8pm means it's a great spot for a Sunday roast without leaving the little ones out.
  • The staff are top-notch, always sorting out tables and making you feel welcome, which really adds to the homely atmosphere.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss – like that chewy beef or under-seasoned chicken in the roast, which might leave you wishing for a bit more effort.
  • It can feel a tad pricey for what you get, as one experience showed it wasn't quite worth the money for an otherwise average meal.
  • With its popularity, you might need to book ahead, especially for larger groups or weekends, or risk missing out on a table.

Been going to the Stag for years. The BEST wings in town. But today we randomly ordered the Lamb chops… OMG they were amazing - fat massive things and amazing Greek salad with it! Honestly can’t fault this place. With the amazing manager sorting the tables that always makes anything possible and today we had the lovely Leo who was a local customer come staff member! Always feel welcome at the Stag, and will always leave with a happy smile! Thanks again!

Great pub near Hampstead Heath! We had their blue cheese chicken wings, which were amazing, and their watermelon feta salad (also very good!) in addition to a few beers. Their Guinness was very smooth! They have gluten free beer options in addition to gluten free food options available! Lovely bartender and waiters! Went almost as soon as it opened on a week day so it was a bit quiet but they were gearing up for a big night. Lots of events announced for the future (stand up comedy, weekend BBQ, Wednesday Wings).

Okay, but not worth the money. Beef was so chewy. Roast potatoes not crispy. Chicken under seasoned. Veg not hot, the Yorkshire was like wet cardboard, no crisp, soggy, no flavour the picture looks better than the taste however the pork was good, best bit.

If you're searching for the perfect Sunday roast in London, look no further than The Stag in Belsize Park. This charming pub has consistently delivered an exceptional experience, earning its place as my absolute favourite spot for a weekend feast. From the warm, inviting atmosphere to the impeccable service and, most importantly, the mouthwatering food, The Stag truly excels. Recently, I booked a heated pagoda in their lovely garden for a birthday celebration with friends. Despite a last-minute change in our group size, the staff were incredibly accommodating and understanding throughout the booking process. We were blessed with a beautiful, sunny day, and the patio heaters ensured we remained comfortably warm in the slight chill. Ordering drinks was a breeze thanks to the convenient app/QR code system, and the staff were exceptionally attentive, efficiently handling our multiple rounds of drinks orders. As for the main event, the Sunday roast, it was nothing short of spectacular. Our group opted for a variety of choices: Roast Beef: Tender, succulent slices of perfectly cooked beef, rich in flavour and melt-in-your-mouth texture. Crispy Pork Belly: A delightful combination of crispy crackling and moist, flavourful pork, a true testament to the chef's skill. Roast Chicken: Juicy and perfectly seasoned, providing a comforting and classic roast option. Each plate was generously laden with all the traditional trimmings, including perfectly roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and the undeniable star of the show: the colossal Yorkshire puddings. These golden, airy delights were served with copious amounts of rich, savoury gravy, poured from a gravy boat, allowing us to indulge to our heart's content. My partner and I opted for the sharing platter for two, a truly immense feast featuring all three meat options. The sheer amount of food was astonishing, and the quality was consistently outstanding. Each meat was cooked to perfection, moist and packed with flavour. The service was consistently friendly and efficient, adding to the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. As it was my birthday, my partner brought a cake, which the restaurant staff graciously allowed us to serve. Otherwise, we would have undoubtedly indulged in their amazing sticky toffee pudding, a personal favourite. To top it all off, our delightful northern waiter surprised me with a complimentary glass of prosecco, a thoughtful gesture that made my birthday even more special. The Stag in Belsize Park offers a truly exceptional Sunday roast experience. The consistent quality of the food, the warm and welcoming service, and the charming atmosphere make it a must-visit for anyone seeking the perfect Sunday lunch. We'll be returning soon!

Fantastic pub which I found in a Reddit thread. I was looking for a place we've never visited before and came across The Stag, one of the things that caught my attention was that it is family run and also pictures of the delicious food which also matched our experience. We didn't have a reservation but they do have a great heated area in the back, both covered and open air. The service was excellent: friendly, savvy and efficient. My husband and I were very hungry and ordered the spinach artichoke dip, chicken wings, veggie wellington roast and "bit of everything roast". I loved both roasts and dip but for me the star of the show were the dhicken wings, I think they're called blue cheesy buffalo chicken wings and they were just fantastic. We also received very good recommendations regarding the food and which beers to get, they have quite the selection and would have loved to try them all! On this occasion we tried three fantastic sours and will make sure to come back and try the rest. If you're ever in North London, this is the place to drop by!
