About This Pub
Ah, The Spotted Dog – it's one of those classic Birmingham pubs that really captures that old-school charm, you know? I love how it has this genuine local feel, with friendly staff who make you feel like you're catching up with mates, and the beer selection is spot on, especially if you're after a top-quality Guinness. The outdoor garden is a real gem for soaking up the sun with a pint in hand. But, fair's fair, it's not all roses; some drinks come at a premium price that might make you think twice, and there've been a few grumbles about them not being poured quite right, like getting short-changed on the spirits. Plus, hearing about the odd negative experience, such as with assistance dogs, is a bit of a downer and makes you hope they sort that out. Overall, though, with its high marks from the crowd, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just go in with your eyes open and you'll likely have a good time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got that lovely traditional pub atmosphere with a real local feel that makes you feel right at home.
-
The bar staff are absolutely charming and go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers, including what sounds like a stellar pint of Guinness – one of the best in Birmingham, apparently.
-
The large outdoor garden area is brilliant for a relaxed sit-down, especially on a nice day.
-
Live jazz nights add a fun touch, even if they're not always spot-on, it's still a nice extra.
Cons
-
Drinks can be a bit steep on the wallet, like shelling out £5.50 for a cider, which feels like a right rip-off.
-
Some folks have mentioned watered-down drinks, such as a rum and coke that's more coke than rum – not ideal for a proper night out.
-
The entertainment, like the jazz nights, hasn't always hit the mark and can leave you a bit disappointed.
-
There have been upsetting incidents, such as issues with assistance dogs, which really shouldn't happen and could put people off.

Drinks are way overpriced, 5.50 for a cider. Absolute rip off. Went there for jazz night it was awful jazz by the way. Thought i would drink some more and the jazz would sound a bit better, it did not. And don't even ask for a rum and coke, you will only get a coke with a drop of rum in it as with the vodka and lemonade. The garden is tiny and the main floor is crammed.
Went in here last year for a drink with friends and was harassed by the owner and kicked out due to my trained assistance dog who was legally allowed to be there. I suggest they look into the laws in the UK surrounding assistance dogs, which are protected under the Equality Act 2010, to avoid future situations of discrimination against disabled customers. The irony of my spotted dog being kicked out of a place called the spotted dog is not lost on me…
Very traditional pub with a very local feel that suited me massively. Lovely bar staff and they had Guinness during the current drought of the black stuff.
Old Pub. Large garden/outdoor area with plenty of seating. £6 pint of Guinness and by far the best I've had in Birmingham. Don't be put off as they serve the Guinness in a non-Guinness glass, it was 10/10. Lady behind bar was also nice and offered us some free snacks.
Great pub, of the beaten track for visitors, but with finding!
Good range of ales and an interesting selection of bottled beers. Bar staff are lovely, happy to let you sample the asked before committing to buy. There was live jazz the evening I visited.
