About This Pub
Ah, The Ruin – it's one of those places in Birmingham that just feels like a proper hidden gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are genuinely lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everyone's sorted, which really sets the tone for a great night out. The atmosphere is spot on too; whether you're tucking into a cosy corner with mates or heading up to that rooftop terrace on a sunny day, it's just the ticket for unwinding with a pint of Guinness or one of their nice lagers. And the food? Well, from the Sunday roasts to those tasty beef tacos, it sounds like they've nailed it – affordable and delicious, which is always a win. On the flip side, the operating hours can be a bit confusing with all those different listings, so you might end up planning around that or giving them a ring first. Plus, it does get packed during big events, which could mean a wait for a table, but honestly, that's often a sign of a good pub, isn't it? All in all, if you're after a place with a solid vibe and no nonsense, I'd say give The Ruin a go – it's got that balance of fun and relaxation that's hard to beat.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly, attentive, and make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening.
-
The atmosphere is spot on; it's got this cosy, welcoming vibe with nooks for chatting with mates and a fantastic rooftop terrace that's perfect for soaking up the sun with a cold lager in hand.
-
Drinks are top-notch, especially the Guinness and the selection of lagers on tap – always fresh and just what you fancy after a long day.
-
The food sounds like a real treat; from outstanding Sunday roasts to delicious beef tacos, it's clear they've got some cracking options that hit the spot.
-
Prices are spot on for what you get – not breaking the bank, and the relaxed beer garden with chilled music adds a lovely touch for unwinding.
Cons
-
The operating hours seem a bit muddled from what I've seen, with varying times listed, which might leave you scratching your head about when it's actually open – always best to double-check before heading out.
-
The website's a tad basic and doesn't give much detail, so you might not get a full picture before visiting, which could be a minor letdown if you're after more info upfront.
-
It could get quite busy, especially around events or Blues games, so you might have to queue or struggle for a seat on popular nights, which isn't ideal for a spontaneous visit.

Big fan of this pub - drink here before and after most blues games. Staff are sound and you get a nice crowd and no trouble in there. Guinness is great and has a couple of nice lagers on tap. Fantastic roof top terrace when the suns out, lovely place to have a few scoops. Yet to try the food but always smells good, so may yet update this review once ive eaten there.
Exceptional staff, amazing food, great prices, relaxed beer garden with chilled music :) 10/10. Sunday roast dinner pork belly was outstanding 😎
Very nice atmosphere, went there with some friends and sat in a cosy little nook. I enjoyed a coca cola with a fresh lemon wedge, very refreshing. Friendly staff, very attentive, would come again.
We visited this pub as part of the "Digbeth Pub Tour". Lovely venue and we ended clambering up to the roof top garden seating area for tasty beers with great views. One to visit. 👌🏻
Came to the ruin without knowing what the place was, without a recommendation and only because the outdoor venue we planned to visit was called off due to the rain… SO glad that happened! Great atmosphere, great staff, extremely individual and the pop up food kitchen had the BEST beef tacos going and deserve a Permanent spot of their own! Music already on at midday with DJ’s through the Saturday!
