About This Pub

Ah, The Old Crown – it's one of those places that just sticks with you, isn't it? Tucked away in the heart of Digbeth, this pub's been around since 1368, and you can really sense that history in every nook and cranny, from the cosy interiors to the buzz of the creative quarter outside. Most folks rave about the friendly faces behind the bar, who make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for one of their tasty meals like the Sunday roast – it's spot on for a hearty feed. The events lineup is another winner; think lively quiz nights or live music that keeps things entertaining and draws in a great mix of people. But, let's be straight, it's not all perfect – there have been a few moans about service being a tad slow at times, which could leave you twiddling your thumbs when you're eager for that next round. Still, with its welcoming atmosphere and solid grub, it's a top spot for a proper pub experience, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe aim for a quieter table inside if the crowds get too much. All in all, it's a belter of a place to share a laugh with mates, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone keen on a bit of Birmingham's character.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of this 656-year-old pub is absolutely captivating, making every visit feel like a step back in time while still being full of life.
  • The staff are generally warm and attentive, creating a welcoming vibe that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a lively night out.
  • They've got cracking food options, like those Sunday roasts and a solid variety of beers, which go down a treat with the crowd.
  • It's buzzing with events, from live music to quiz nights, offering something for everyone and adding to that great community feel.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes fall short, with a few tales of long waits that might put a dampener on your evening.
  • The outside area can get a bit noisy and hectic, so if you're after a quieter spot, you'll want to stick to the indoors.

Terrible service twice. In the summer of 2023 ,I was in Digbeth, pushing my 93 year old mom, in her wheelchair ,Mom said I love the old crown, shall we have a drink and something to eat? .I said yes, so we ordered some food and 2 Hot chocolates ,the food was ok ,but we had to wait over 20 mins for the drinks.when they finally arrived they were cold ,I said "let's just drink up and get out ,we can't find a member of staff anyway to complain"as we were leaving another customer was complaining about how cold her tea was .Fast forward to December 16th 2024,I was in Digbeth again about 2.30.pm with my mom ,when she said "I love the old crown ,shall we have a hot chocolate and some food "? I said "remember last time? "Oh yes" mom said ,so we sat at a table ,grabbed a menu and went to the bar to order 2 hot chocolates while we browsed at the menu .After several minutes a member of staff appeared ,I ordered the drinks ,we sat there for over 20 mins ,while other people were trying to get served ,we couldn't find the barmaid .As me and my mom got more agitated and frustrated ,the barmaid finally brought the 2 drinks to our table ,she said "sorry about the wait ,we only have one hot drinks machine " so before she left I thought I'd better check how hot it actually is.Both drinks were totally cold.I said "they are freezing ,taste them"she said I'll make you two more ,I said "no thanks I'll have the money back please" so then another member of staff gave me the refund.I said you need to sort your coffee machine out.Never again .Update: when I posted my review last year Kieran the owner asked me for my email address so he could make it up to us .I sent Kieran my email address several months ago ,but no reply as of yet .

Me and my wife had a lovely time at The Old Crown, Sunday lunch with a great wine and wonderful friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us. Will return soon

Great value for money. It is ideal for solo travelers who only care about having a clean bed and bathroom. The pub, which is downstairs, serves nice food and a good variety of beers.

In early March, we traveled from Valencia, Spain, to see a rare band play and check out the city. We were just wandering around looking for a spot for a beer and ended up staying there the whole night because of the really good vibe and how friendly and down-to-earth the staff were with us, even though our English wasn't the best. Definitely, if we're ever back in Birmingham, we'll go back because places like this are just great.

I found this a lovely old pub, with a great feel to it. Staff were friendly and attentive, and the sharing platters for our group went down a treat. Their outside area was a bit busier and noisier ... But go inside for a much more relaxed and quieter environment - this place clearly caters for both!! A little bit out of the city centre, surrounded by some industrial, but I'd recommend.
